Ever since I started my career in teaching, I remember that confronted by concerned individuals who, in the process of deciding whether to learn an instrument music, expect me to answer an age old question:

"Am I talented?"
I must confess, for quite a long time, the answer to this question evaded me. However, when I delved into the field of education of the child, I discovered a fundamental truth:

Musical talent is not inherited: it is built.

Now, I am convinced that musical talent is a God given seeds within each newly born the child. However, for it to bloom, it must be nurtured every day from a very early age. Therefore, the child must be constantly exposed to a wide different types of music. Amazingly enough, the subconscious mind will register the new sounds and rhythms. A few years down the road, when the child begins music lessons, he has a storehouse of natural resources which will help him to develop the necessary skills with more ease.

I have seen this principle action repeatedly. A young adult begins lessons with me and make remarkable progress in a short period of time. When I ask about his musical background, he'll most likely reply: "My parents are constantly listening to all types of music and I bring to the concert as I was growing up.
