About Drums and Drumming

First your foot starts to tap, then your hands beat a staccato rhythm on your lap and, before you know it, you’re bopping along to the beat. We’ve all experienced the energy in a night club and felt our pulses quicken to the ‘doof doof doof’ of a bass drum. It’s undeniable: drumming is energising and exhilarating.

Drumming circles – corporate, school or community events where groups of people sit in a circle playing improvised beats on percussion instruments – are gaining popularity in social as well as business and therapeutic settings.

Drumming circles are by no means a modern invention. Many cultures on this planet have long used drumming to strengthen communities; even for relaxation. Because no musical experience is necessary drumming circles are accessible and are great team building exercises in any context.

Drums from Around the World

Drums come in all shapes and sizes. The instruments used in drumming circles are often of Middle Eastern or African origin.

The dumbek, for example, is of Middle Eastern origin. The player holds the drum under the left arm and taps out the beat with the fingers of both hands. Originally, dumbeks were carved of wood, but now you’ll find metal and ceramic drumbeks too.

Djembe drums are also a popular choice. Originating in Western Africa, the djembe was (and sometimes still is) used in tribal ritual occasions.

Maybe your children play with a tambourine, the most well known small drum. Most of us have played a tambourine at some time – they’re small, fun, and virtually fool proof. The tambourine, in one form or another, shows up in the history of many different cultures and has as many names: Gaval, Tamburello, Riq and many more.

Drums such as the drumbek and djembe often feature in world and new age music. Frank Natale, aka Professor Trance and one of the most inspirational figures in the new age movement, promoted drumming and dance – and tribal music from many cultures – as a way to find your inner balance and place in the world. Frank Natale passed on in 2002 but left us an inspiring legacy in his music.

Drumming and Team Building

So why is drumming such a great team building exercise? There are several reasons, the most obvious being that drumming reduces stress. It puts people in a relaxed social circle and lets them pound out their frustrations on a drum. It’s easy and fun, and the environment is friendly and non-judgemental; there is no competition and no one person is more important or suffers more scrutiny than anyone else.

Drumming is also great for creativity. It encourages use of the right side of the brain – the creative side – which, combined with the release of tension, frees up the mind and helps the ideas start to flow again. Drumming is energising and creates enthusiasm.”

Another reason why drumming is so great for team building and team bonding is that it encourages cooperation and illustrates that every member in the team is equally important. When everybody plays their part the result is harmonious and cohesive.

So there you have it: drumming is healthy! It encourages team work and promotes creativity. If you aren’t so sure about the truth of that, grab an old plastic bucket and turn it on it’s head, then tap away for a while – it won’t take you long to find the beat!

Why Hire a Drum Teacher

Hiring a drum teacher is just like taking lessons in a music school. What are taught in the music schools will be similary taught by the drum instructor.There are actually few differences between the two types of learning. One advantage of hiring a drum teacher is having your own drumset with you at home. Well for me; I prefer hiring a drum instructor or teacher. Here are some good reasons why we should hire a drum teacher in Singapore:

1. Time Leisure. Having hired a drum teacher, you get to manage your own time. Take how many sessions you want in a week or a month and of course this will dictate how fast you will progress in the instrument you are taking lessons of. This is highly beneficial because you have full control of when the sessions will take place. You can have as many sessions as you want depending on your schedule.

2. Teacher and Student Interaction. Since you hired a drum teacher, you take the lessons at home, therefore a good interaction between you as the student and the teacher will be developed. It is proven that a good interaction between a student and a teacher makes learning easier and makes the teacher teach more efficient. Generally, with a teacher that seems like a close friend teaching you, progress will be rapid and more enjoyable.

3. Parents can oversee. While you take your lessons, especially for children, your parents can see how your teacher will teach you and can also guide and give advices to you. Well, some teachers may be rude or rough to their students making the student scared and quit the lessons because of teacher factors, and that is what parents wont really like.

4. Fast Learner. To enroll at drum school to learn how to play will result in fast and easy learning. Taking the drum lessons through a private drum teacher, on the other hand, will make learning even faster and easier. Lessons that take months to learn will just be a month of less and lessons learned for weeks will just be days. That is the most satisfying benefit of hiring a drum instructor.

The most important thing you should take note is to know the drum instructor in singapore you will hire. Parents should find the right teacher for their child very carefully. Find the one who your child is most comfortable with and least likely to scare your son or daughter. Children are sometimes difficult to teach causing teachers to lose their tempers.

Drum Rudiments – Foundational Techniques in Drum Set Drumming

Learning drum rudiments will allow you to have a set of musical techniques at the ready, so you can add a different sound no matter what kind of music you are playing.

Rudiment History

The first written rudiments were used in the 1600s by Swiss mercenaries in battle. Their early snare drums were loud and sharp enough to be heard over the general chaos of the noisy battlefield.

The drum beats set the tempo for troop movements, and could send commands based on the pattern of each rudiment. These types of drum patterns were used by Napoleon, and helped him to victory on more than one occasion.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, these rudiments became more standardized. Professional drummers were employed by the french king and used to relay orders in battle. The common use of these drummers was mainly in battle.

Drumming Rudiments Today

Today’s rudimentary drumming comes in 3 main forms:

- American drumming
– Swiss Basler Trommeln
– Scottish Pipe Drumming

Within these cultures, you can find the patterns used in modern rudimental drumming.

There are 40 drum rudiments that are recognized internationally, according to the Percussive Arts Society, and the National Association of Rudimental Drummers. These rudiments form the foundation of modern drumming. They consider them to be the alphabet that makes up the language of drumming.

The 40 rudiments are broken up into 6 main groups:

- Double stroke roll or Drum roll rudiments
– Flam rudiments
– Single Stroke roll rudiments, or drumroll rudiments
– Double stroke roll
– Press roll rudiments
– Multiple bounce roll
– Paradiddle or diddle rudiments
– Drag drum rudiments

These rudiments are not played at the same time. Some of these patterns are played more than others, but learning some from all groups will give you the range you need to do effective fills.

When first learning these rudiments, start by practicing on a pad. After you’ve gotten more comfortable with each one, start playing them on your drum kit. Rudiments aren’t just for the snare drum either. Any drum in your kit can be used, including the hi-hat and cymbals.

Once you learn your rudiments, you will be able to come up with new drumming patterns on the fly because you will have learned the basic vocabulary of drumming.

‘Round Midnight $11.99 Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. On Kokuchov (nicknamed for a black swan), Masami Akita (Merzbow) returns to his drum kit. He is a formidable drummer, to say the very least; an utterly creative musician, he can play forms as well as visionary improvisations. He employs the drums generously against and in concert with his power electronics. This is especially true on ? Black Swan,? and on the album? s closing track ? Ushiwaka 2.? The latter of these showcases a series of repetitive rhythms slowly evolving as other sounds, from sampled guitar drones and reverb to industrial sounds, are gradually folded in, creating an uncharacteristic set of dynamics that is somewhat less punishing than some of his other pieces. ? Mesmerism,? opens the set with a series of pulsing, gated keyboard sounds that are hopelessly distorted, as drums punctuate the end of every line. As the piece develops, more keyboards are layered on top and folded in, creating a body of sounds that is not unlike what it might be like to hear Martin Rev play with Loop live! Guitar sounds shift in and out of the keyboard racket, drums fill what little space there is and force the rhythmic pulse forward into oblivion. 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Reverend Horton Heat $9.99 The Reverend Horton Heat (the collective name for Jim Heath on guitar and vocals, bassist Jimbo Wallace, and either Taz Bentley or Scott Churilla behind the drums) cut three fine albums for Sub Pop Records between 1992 and 1994, and a pair of so-so records for Interscope in 1996 and 1998. The bad news is, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection features 14 tunes from Heath and Company’s Interscope period, with one track from their final Sub Pop album (originally distributed by Interscope) included for seasoning. As you might expect, this is a far-from-definitive Reverend Horton Heat compilation, though in all fairness this disc is a better buy than either It’s Martini Time or Space Heater, the below par albums which generated the bulk of the material here, since the best cuts from both albums make it onto this set (which was compiled by Heath himself). The remastering for this set sounds great. Heath lays out all sorts of frantic overdriven guitar leads throughout, and “That’s Showbiz” is a hilarious tongue-in-cheek look at the downside of the musician’s life, but the first three Reverend Horton Heat albums had the best songs, and the band always rocked harder with Taz on the drum kit, which makes this disc a fine look at a band’s lesser days, and that’s about all. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

23rd & Stout $15.98 After more than 30 years in the music biz, Chuck E. Weiss is still best known (a) as one of Tom Waits’ best friends, and (b) for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones’ hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” The latter distinction hasn’t done much for him lately, but he seems to be counting on the former to draw interest in his fourth album, 23rd & Stout. Most of 23rd & Stout sounds like some unreleased Tom Waits album that walks in a Twilight Zone between the Beefheart-influenced throb of Swordfishtrombones and the laid-back beatnik vibe of Blue Valentine. While it’s entirely possible that Waits has borrowed a bit of his buddy Weiss’ schtick over the years, there’s also little argument that Waits is far better at it, and it doesn’t help that Weiss’ band here (headlined by Tony Gilkyson on guitar and Don Heffington on drums) isn’t able to deliver the gloriously strange groove of Waits’ more recent work, though the group sounds great on the jazz-leaning material. When Weiss goes into a shaggy-dog story like the title cut or a lurching stomp such as “Prince Minsky’s Lament,” it’s all but impossible not to compare him to Waits, but in all fairness Weiss is a better than average songwriter, and when he lets his funny side take over (like he does on “Half Off at the Rebop Shop,” “Sho Is Cold,” or “Piccolo Pete”), he’s an enjoyable and absorbing performer. (His sly interpretation of “Primrose Lane” also suggests he could deliver a fine set of standards if he were so inclined.) Too much of 23rd & Stout makes Chuck E. Weiss sound like the Baja Marimba Band to Tom Waits’ Tijuana Brass, and the shame of that is he’s clearly talented enough establish a more distinctive creative identity by now, as the best moments of this album confirm. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

40th Anniversary Collection $22.98 This reviewer is usually loathe to give compilation albums the highest rating, as they have an unfair advantage over original albums; and it’s not as though there aren’t already good multi-CD sets on the Searchers, including their 30th Anniversary Collection from Sequel Records. But this two-disc, 56-song collection goes into territory where the early triple-disc set never ventured as the first Searchers compilation to encompass not only their most familiar work on Pye Records, but also Phonogram, RCA, Sire, PRT, and Coconut Records. It also avails itself of the vast expansion of the band’s tape library in recent decades, including demos and live tracks, all in state-of-the-art sound. The result is not only the first truly comprehensive overview of this group, which never had a bad or a dull period, but also their best-sounding account in terms of the sharpness of the remastering. What may surprise even longtime fans is how well their 1963 vintage demos and live tracks come off as performances. Based on the evidence here, these guys were ready to record that far back and had some edges that were a lot rougher and sometimes sharper than the polished, rhythm guitar focused sound that they later cultivated in the studio. In a sense, listening to this collection from front to back is a lot like going through the Beatles’ history, except that the Searchers never took a left turn into psychedelia or, with the exceptions of Tony Jackson and Chris Curtis, developed egos that threatened the integrity of the group. The 2003 remastering has also given their stuff a startling immediacy of impact that outstrips their best prior CDs. You can actually hear the action on the guitars and the drums on this collection, especially on “Sweets for My Sweet” and “Ain’t Gonna Kiss Ya,” the two earliest official releases. With 4th & Wall the twosome has expanded to a sextet with the addition of live bass, drums, percussion, and guitar, further swelled by a host of guest musicians, greatly extending WIG’s aural vistas and influences — which now span the musical spectrum from synth pop to classic rock, from new wave to techno. A Keith Richards-ish guitar lick enlivens the infectious “Get Up,” echoes of “Free Bird” soar in the finale of “Sofia,” the Soup Dragons’ spirit swirls around “Lost Children,” and Echo & the Bunnymen’s moody atmospheres pool around “To Die in LA” and “All My Friends.” On the irresistible “Solar Eyes,” the group juxtaposes bubbly synth pop against a lusher new romantic style and a four-on-the-floor disco beat, then stirs in spacy effects and a funky feel. Sadly, though, the set’s sequencing is a bit slack, occasionally making for jarring shifts in styles between tracks, which is a shame, because in reality 4th & Wall is actually a quite coherent album. This is particularly evident in the songs’ themes, which revolve around the lure of L.A. and its nearby beaches, as well as more universal interpersonal subjects. The styles may change and the atmospheres alter from languorous to driving, but what remains constant are the lilting vocals, strong melodies, and psychedelic keyboards that remain the core of WIG’s sound. Recorded during his 50th birthday celebration in September of 2003, the set delivers everything you would expect from an Electric Masada show: great tunes, blistering solos from everyone concerned, and a slightly rocked-up atmosphere. The band does not disappoint; there seems to have been a real air of excitement surrounding the whole 50th birthday series, at least judging from the performances that had been released to this point. The bulk of the soloing belongs to Zorn on alto, Marc Ribot on guitar, and Jamie Saft on Rhodes, with Ikue Mori’s laptop contributing interesting colors and tones, with sounds that range from what sounds like a babbling child to shards of broken glass. The double drums with percussion of Kenny Wollesen, Joey Baron, and Cyro Baptista come up with some wild rhythms, especially during Ribot’s solo on “Tekufah.” “Idalah-Abal” really rocks things up, and “Hath-Arob” gets even crazier, sounding like a Cobra-esque conduction. “Yatzar” and “Kisofim” are on the mellow side, but no less exciting musically. Several of the tunes stretch out to near epic lengths, giving the players plenty of room to play, with Zorn leading the way and calling the shots. This is a fantastic ensemble, with lots of time spent playing together, and Zorn knows how get the best out of them. Fans of the Masada series will not be disappointed. The digipack case doesn’t mention the group members to reinforce the idea of a collective effort, but the press release confirms that the lineup has remained the same: Helge Sten (aka Deathprod) on electronics, St? le Storl? kken on keyboards and synthesizers, Jarle Vespestad on drums, and Arve Henriksen on trumpet and electronics. The music follows the ambient path laid down in 5, while adding more textural noise and hypnotic rhythms. Deathprod has selected a captivating set that unfolds delicately, immersing the listener on an hourlong journey. Unrehearsed and improvised as they may be, these pieces sound scripted at the very least, the individual interventions too well timed not to be planned ahead. Henriksen’s sparse trumpet calls in “6.2″ and his soft singing over light distorted piano in “6.6″ provide memorable moments. A’s, B’s & EP’s $10.98 The Animals’ output on EMI has been so heavily reissued and recompiled so many times that none of it is especially rare, or notable for that reason — it just stands up as music, especially the singles, which are what we have represented here. The compilation CD A’s B’s & EP’s is a handy way of taking a tour of the group’s early sound, up through the middle of 1965, boiling down their singles, B-sides, and EP’s in excellent sound. It took the group a few tries to really master the art of making a strong album from start to finish, but — as we’re reminded here — their 45s were beyond reproach, exciting, bold, and daring, and all memorable. Hearing Hilton Valentine’s guitar crunching and chiming away on “I’m Crying,” or John Steel’s drums up close and personal on “Boom Boom,” supporting Eric Burdon’s voice and juxtaposed with Alan Price’s organ, is still a bracing experience 40 years later — and on this master, Valentine’s trip down the fret board and Price’s keyboard flourishes exude rippling energy and a bracing presence — even on cheap speakers, Steel’s snare is distinguishable from the rest of the rhythm section; and on “It’s My Life” you can practically hear the action on his kit. And this disc is also a good opportunity for low-level fans to discover obscurities such “I’m Gonna Change the World” which, with its ambitious lyric and form, sort of anticipates the later compositions that Burdon would cut, on his own and away from virtually all help. The annotation is nothing special, the packaging has its weaknesses (in terms of the original releases of the songs), and EMI’s Complete Animals still runs circles around this CD, but it’s an okay piece to have and easier to find than that double-disc set, as of 2004. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

Afreaka! [Bonus Tracks] $24.98 DJs like Gilles Petersen have been hip to the seven-piece wonder band Demon Fuzz for years, and as of the 21st century — now that everybody’s put away their James Brown records for sampling — other club jocks are getting into the act of sampling this incredibly rare LP. Afreaka! was the only release by Demon Fuzz. Released in 1970, Afreaka! is a wild mash of Afro-Latin funk, breakbeats, tripped-out soul, jazz fusion, and psychedelic journeying. These seven black musicians took on everything that was happening, and were musicians enough to make it work for them. This CD reissue by Castle/Sanctuary includes the entire original album plus their three-track EP whose A-side was “I Put a Spell on You.” Yeah, there are vocals on this set, but they are far from a distraction. Imagine the early Santana band mashed hard on the mouth by Fela, Sly, and mid-’60s Blue Note soul-jazz — and having heard prog rock. Oh yeah…heavy, demented, and so out there that it’s timeless. Had they heard this when they did their mighty Root Down EP, the Beastie Boys would have released a very different record. Most tracks run in the eight- and nine-minute range and get down with tough drums at the core, with rhythmic shifts happening on a grooved dime. Killer horns, Hammond B-3s, electric guitars, and deep tough slinky funky bass all wind together to create a mix so utterly intoxicating and fluid that it’s difficult to take in one listen — check out the Eastern mode sax solo on “Another Country” or the stomp-and-slide greasiness of “Past Present and Future.” And as for the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins cover, it’s like the Meters jamming with Osibisa! There’s also a fine extended voodoolicious psych-soul cover of Ray Harris’ R&B classic “Mercy” (subtitled “Variation No. 1″). This is the real deal — solid, freaky-deaky, and groove-centric. Afro Bop Alliance $18.98 Where once they were three — Dave Samuels on vibes, Paquito D’Rivera on saxophone, and Andy Narell on steel drums — Caribbean Jazz Project has morphed over the past decade-plus into a big band of close to 20 members, 13 of them horn players. Samuels, who contributes marimba as well as vibes, remains at the helm, and it’s clearly his vehicle — he also wrote five of the nine tracks on this set. The band cooks, no question about it, and Samuels’ Latin-leaning arrangements are smart and steamy. But new material is in short supply, and the album ultimately has a sense of d? j? vu about it. Nearly all of the material, including covers of Thelonious Monk’s “Bemsha Swing,” Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments,” and John Coltrane’s “Naima,” has appeared on previous CJP recordings, and even if Samuels felt a burning need to return to these songs to recast them as big-band numbers, he might have tried reworking them while he was at it — outside of the sheer volume of players involved, there’s simply not much going on here that adds a new dimension to the Caribbean Jazz Project story. That said, the quality of musicianship throughout the album is superb, and those unfamiliar with the previous releases will undoubtedly find it exhilarating. Akron/Family II (The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT) $14.98 Akron/Family debuted their new format as a trio minus vocalist and guitarist Ryan Vanderhoof on 2009′s Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free. They also moved pointedly away from the trappings of post-psych acid folk into multiple directions simultaneously: from animistic avant-rock, freaky funk, and even prog. S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, issued in February of 2011, solidifies that move in a surprising manner. It is easily the most optimistic, spiritually blissed-out recording in the band’s catalog. It was composed and arranged in a cabin near a live volcano in Akan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan, then recorded at Michigan Central Station, the massive abandoned train station in Detroit, as well as at various homes in Portland, OR. Teaming once more with producer Chris Koltay, the trio of Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, and Dana Janssen are joined on select tracks by Vanderhoof on slide guitar, vocalist Ali Beletic, trumpeter Ed Sortman, and Japanese vanguard percussion legend Tatsuya Nakatani. Tribalistic drums, distorted lo-fi efx, a screaming lead guitar — that sounds a lot like the late Stuart Adamson’s from Skids — soaring organ, and a chorus of chanted vocals introduce “Silly Bears” and thus the album. All instruments are on stun, as the vocals chart a journey to metaphoric bliss inside a post-acid nursery rhyme. The sounds of nature — ? la birdsongs — permeate the less strident but ultimately more beautiful textures and ambiences of “Islands,” with lilting keyboards, drifting guitars, and hypnotic tom-toms. “So It Goes” begins as a riff-laden guitar fest, but shifts gears once the melody kicks in and becomes a celebratory paean to generosity. Sonic abstraction has its place here too, on the moodier “A AAA O A WAY” and in the shimmering interior dreamscape that introduces “Fuji II (Single Pane).” The album’s final cut, “Creator,” uses Pharoah Sanders’ lyric from “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” but is far from his beautifully …

Alive in Poland $19.95 With epithets pouring out of Blaze Bayley’s mouth about 13 minutes into the DVD, this crunchy batch of hard metal gushes from the screen in beautifully filmed movie-like form. The menacing image of the ex-Iron Maiden lead singer who fronted Wolfsbane as far back as 1988 on theLive Fast Die Fast album is in fine form on March 24, 2007 in Katowice, Poland for the Metalmania festival. The veteran may not be a household name, but his prowess is impressive and the DVD is full of fury and brimstone. Metal Mind Productions and MVD give Bayley the star treatment and he deserves it, both on the cover of the DVD and with a colorful eight-page insert chock-full of photos of bandmates Rich Newport on guitar, second guitarist Nick Bermudez, David Bermudez on bass, and Rico Banderra on drums. Sometimes the band runs away with the music, as on “Two Worlds Collide,” which could be the musicians playing on two different planets on a collision course, but since attitude and feeling is what this genre is all about, the chaos works to Bayley’s advantage. That tune is also on 2003′s As Live as It Gets from the band Blaze (totally different set of musicians from this outing) and an album with less than half of the songs overlapping due to the fact that Bayley has a very deep catalog. All One, Krishna’s ninth CD, delivers inward-looking listeners that much closer to recognizing the chant master’s unlikely background on their own, though. Essentially an hour-long melodic recitation of the name Hare Krishna set to accompaniment that ranges from Indian to classical to rock in style, the disc makes use of several rock & roll heavy hitters. Co-produced with Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Jay Messina (Aerosmith), and David Nichtern (who wrote “Midnight at the Oasis”), All One finds Becker on bass, Nichtern on guitar, and Def Leppard’s Rick Allen on drums. And, of course, since one must confront the seemingly eternal academically trained analysis and cynicism of the indie world, “Is it necessary?” The answer to both questions is “yes.” While the surface of Explosions in the Sky’s sonic sense of labyrinthine adventure is similar, the manner in which they get to the center of each piece is not. On “The Birth and Death of the Day,” which opens the set, violence and noise are threatened from the beginning with distorted chords, feedback, and big crescendos. Space enters before lyricism here, though harmonically everything resonates as one, and for a moment one thinks that this is a forgotten intro to some lost and found U2 song of yore, but they quickly pass that mark and dig inside the chaos for its roots and branches. “It’s Natural to Be Afraid” begins with subtle dissonance and the guitars emerging out of quiet chaos with sounds and pianos playing slowly and contrapuntally.
