3 Fervent Travelers $12.99 Time for Three — fiddlers Zach DePue and Nick Kendall and standup bassman Ranaan Meyer — bill themselves as a genre-stretching, boundary-demolishing trio with a sound all their own. They do have impressive chops and Meyer, the main composer, has skills that draw on a wide range of music, but they’re not the only band in the land that’s blending classical, bluegrass, Gypsy jazz, and swing in its music. Groups like Leftover Salmon and the Hot Club of Cowtown explore similar territory, maybe without the classical European touches. That said, there’s still plenty of remarkable playing on 3 Fervent Travelers. “Wyoming 307″ opens the disc in a dark, droning, classical mode, then slowly evolves into a bluegrass barnburner with DePue and Kendall trading off sizzling lead lines and seguing directly into “Forget About It,” which continues the bluegrass-style mayhem with the fiddlers slipping up into their ear-tweaking higher registers, each playing a different variation on the melody while Meyer adds rhythmic accents on his bass. “Don Don” opens with a musical quote from “Jailhouse Rock,” then Kendall and DePue play an extended jazzy, Grappelli-meets-Bob Wills interlude, dropping out to give Meyer time for a brief solo before their Bill Monroe-meets-Monk finale. The violin accents on “Philly Phunk” live up to the tune’s title, while the solos range throughout the blues, jazz, country, and new music spectrum with unpredictable shifts in time, tempo, and timbre. They close the album with a classically influenced arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that accents the tune’s solemn tone, despite the rippling violin triplets that accent the second chorus. They close with a jazzy version of “Orange Blossom Special” that features Meyer’s impressive bass work setting up the dueling fiddles of DePue and Kendall, playing at lightning speed and dropping Arab and Gypsy jazz accents into the mix. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Bach: Sonatas & Partitas, BWV 1004-1006 $21.98 Clapton is God!” was the well-known graffiti scrawled across 20th century London, praising the Englishman’s fiery guitar playing. Based on Isabelle Faust’s blazing accounts of Bach’s sonatas and partitas on this 2010 Harmonia Mundi disc, one might expect to see the graffiti “Faust is God!” scrawled across 21st century Paris. Rather than play all six of these canonical works of the solo violin literature, Faust has chosen the D minor and E major partitas and placed the C major Sonata between them. All three are tremendously difficult both technically and expressively, but starting with the D minor Partita with its celebrated Chaconne was particularly audacious. Faust rises to the challenge with an utterly devastating account of the work. Playing with only a dab of vibrato but a boatload of virtuosity, she overcomes every technical hurdle in this surpassingly difficult work. She saves the best for last, and her Chaconne is stunningly powerful, as well as amazingly nuanced and profoundly moving. Her other two performances are equally impressive, especially the opening Adagio and Fugue from the C major Sonata, which builds from a whisper to a shattering contrapuntal climax. There have been other great recordings of these works, but Faust’s surely belongs among the best. Harmonia Mundi’s sound is close but not overly intimate. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

Forever [Bonus Tracks] $18.98 Bookended by two tracks that essentially are the same piece — “Everywhere,” a quicker, almost dancy number that still sounds uniquely Cranes, and the slower, stripped-down “Rainbows” — Forever finds Cranes moving from strength to strength. Having reached a new level of variety and elegant restraint combined with brusque power on Wings of Joy, the foursome continued exploring such combinations on Forever without simply rehashing the previous album. If anything, the album went to extremes in both directions — the quieter moments were even more hushed and shadowed, the louder points all that much more whip-snap cruel. “Cloudless” remains the album’s most sweetly beautiful, truly haunting moment. Over what sounds like a synthesized combination of plucked violin and keyboards, doubtless played by Jim Shaw, sister Alison delivers a softly husky vocal that slowly grows in strength. More synth strings swell up in the background, just enough, followed later by gentle electric guitar and at the end distant drums. On a completely different tip, there’s “Clear,” its searing, blunt lead guitar line matched by a massive rhythm slam, only occasionally interrupted by a quieter moment or two before launching back into the full band attack. “Jewel” ended up being a surprise U.K. and U.S. hit, though thanks to a somewhat transformed remix courtesy of longtime fan Robert Smith (in fact, Forever takes its name from a Cure rarity of the same title). On the album, Jim Shaw’s original rougher drums stand out, but the attractive poppy groove of the song remains the same, Alison Shaw’s singing at her clearest yet over the simple but effective acoustic guitar rhythms and abrasive electric solo. USED: Musica Mexicana 2 $7.99 ASV’s Musica Mexicana, Vol. 2, is the second issue in ASV’s trend-setting series of Mexican classical music releases, and one of the best of the lot. It pulls together three of the finest orchestral works Mexico has to offer, Manuel Ponce’s Concerto for violin and orchestra, Carlos Ch? vez’s Sinfonia India, and Silvestre Revueltas’ La Noche de Los Mayos, in the standard configuration assembled by Jos? Limantour. There is a hidden treasure here in the performance of Ponce’s seldom-heard Concerto for violin and orchestra in that it is played by the dedicatee of the work, violinist Henryk Szeryng, in his fourth and final recording of it. This must have been one of Szeryng’s last recordings, as he died in 1988, but for some reason ASV is not very forthcoming about the date of the recording, which appears to be from the mid-’80s; perhaps its presence might cast doubt as to whether the recording is truly “DDD” as it says. It makes no difference to one’s ears, however, as Szeryng really earns his paycheck here — he has been playing this concerto for more than 40 years, and he is able to raise it from a mere whisper of sound to a slashing attack of rapid sixteenths without batting an eyelash. It is a superb testament to Szeryng’s artistry, and Enrique B? tiz and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provide a sensitive, though never slack, backdrop. One wonders why this concerto isn’t performed more often — structurally it is practically a textbook example of what a violin concerto should be, and it combines the trajectory of romantic form with a lean, neo-Classical orchestration and a nod to impressionist harmonies, not to mention the natural Latin flavoring of Ponce. It even contains a couple of wry quotations from other material; a few notes from the opening of “The Donkey Serenade,” a pop radio hit inescapable in about 1940, poke out from the solo part, and even a strand of his own “Estrellita.” Oddly, the only other violinist to record this concerto is Miranda C…
