The Tactics of Steve Heyer CEO

The company Harry & David is a famous as one of the starters of fruit sales through mail order. This American company was established in 1910 with the purchase of a 240-acre-wide pear orchard. It was fairly strong at some points in its history, but also experienced weak points that ended only when Steve Heyer CEO took the helm.

When Heyer took over the business, he had a lot of work ahead of him. The company faced annual losses and that was during the time of economic depression in the US and many parts of the country. The remedy Heyer enforced began with his retrenchment of some top-tier officers and redistribution of their old salaries into salaries for more sales managers.

It was a bold move, as the new CEO let go of “underperformers … in the senior executive ranks," as Heyer called them. The beauty of Heyer's gambit was that it let the business save huge amounts of money without having to cut back on wages. This is important in a time such as this, where so many wage cuts have been made.

“We have duplications and multiple systems that were very expensive,” the CEO explained. “Nobody looked and nobody tried to find new ways to do old things." Heyer, however, happens to have no fears of change.

He has spoken time and time gain on the subject of thinking out of the box and the courage to implement those new thoughts. He challenged them to challenge the convention and to empower the customers they serve. Heyer thought that the coming years would see consumers demanding more and more customization.

Heyer advocated a change in culture in the way business should be done in the United States. An example of this sort of huge shift in methods is shown by Heyer himself in his Starwood Hotels marketing. He explained that they stopped marketing hotel rooms and began selling experiences and memories.

Mr. Heyer also served as president and chief operating officer of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. from 1994 to 2001. Heyer happened to be working for AOL Time Warner around that very period too. He has also dabbled in leadership for advertising groups such as Young & Rubicam.

Heyer noted that one of the things he noticed first about Harry & David was that it did not have an advertising plan, or even any contacts from ASI. It was not advertising its products, and therefore was losing out on sales opportunities. The considerable perks of having representation in the Advertising Specialty Institute were lost opportunities for Harry & David.

The new CEO seemed to have quickly identified the problem. He noted that a huge problem had to do with the rift between two of the company's biggest sections. The company, he said, had been mired in the same old techniques for too long.

The business has fortunately started to find its legs again. Fresh ways of approaching problems are taking the stage, and fresh approaches too are starting to be used. “It was a garden that was untended and now we have a whole team tending it,” said Steve Heyer CEO.

How Did Steve Heyer CEO Keep Harry & David Afloat?

Heyer thus pruned the higher branches of all those unnecessary yet resource-sucking shoots, keeping and rewarding only those execs who actually did their jobs. The best part about the decision was the result: tens of millions in savings without having to resort to wage cuts. This is important in a time such as this, where so many wage cuts have been made.

Heyer claimed that the occurrence of multiple channels where one would have sufficed was sinking the company. The organization was suffering from a crippling unwillingness to go out of the old box and think outside of it. Heyer's willingness to try out new things thus worked out well for Harry & David.

When he was still working for Coca Cola, he was already talking about the importance of innovation. According to him, companies had to be willing to make changes every now and then. Heyer's predictions had to do with a world where the primary requirement would be for tailored experiences and products.

New techniques had to be put forward to address new circumstances, in Heyer's opinion. In 2004, he became CEO for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide where he yet again implemented bold and radical changes. He shift the point of emphasis in his marketing from the quarters in the hotels to the entertainments and experiences and memories to be had in the hotels.

Heyer has worked for other companies, including Turner Broadcasting. At the same time, he was occupying a seat with AOL-Time's operating committee. Heyer is not without experience in advertising either, having been a top-tier executive for an ad company before.

By the time he did take on Harry & David, the place was in such chaos that he said he was aghast at its lack of advertising efforts. Harry & David was not getting enough business because of its reluctance to advertise. It was crucial to be link to the Advertising Specialty Institute.

He appeared to have seen the issues straightaway. He noted that a huge problem had to do with the rift between two of the company's biggest sections. To put simply, Heyer said, “There has been a shortage of innovation” at Harry and David.

At the moment, Harry & David is starting to recover, though. Harry & David now has an expanded selection of products as well as new perspectives informing its activities. “It was a garden that was untended and now we have a whole team tending it,” said Steve Heyer CEO.
