I think that's dedicated hip hop emcee Nas raised the debate. Now it is up to us to answer yes or no to this question.
However, I think it would be only meaningless debate on whether hip hop is dead or not. Our response must be full of nuance instead of being blinded in a common artistic blur.
Since its creation in the Bronx, NYC, in the late 6O's, hip hop is often in an emergency state 911. Real, true hip hop emerged from the street, mainly from commnunity black and is aimed at readers new to the street. Although a common misconception that hip hop is about self expression only widely accepted, point This is often quite misunderstood.
An emcee should express itself, but a lot of other artists-do without having any hip hop spirit in their way of expression. If hip hop is about expressing myself only, and then acts like Marilyn Manson and emo boys are hip hop too …
You are hip hop, not only by proving your ability to emceeing, but by carrying the legacy of hip hop culture you mean to me, that, regardless of your skin color, you can relate to hip hop culture in one way or another. That's being hip hop to me.
But I digress … The question is to know what we call contemporary hip hop music is dead or not.
Many middle-aged up to the masterminds such as Ice T, NWA, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash will be very disappointed to turn hip hop is taking right now.
Even in the early 80's hip hop is not expected to be commercial value is now. Emcees and DJs are their art more for their own enjoyment and for their extensive road audience.
Emcees like Public Enemy and NWA played the role of social commentators and opposed some resistance to the U.S. discriminatory policies against Black folks. Their words have some weight and is mainly supported by people living in the hood.
Nowadays, hip hop is totally different. Not only be commercial, but the audience has changed. I sometimes have the feeling that it has lost its original meaning. Many of you, rolling your commercial rappers benzos your hoes and jewels buried with hip hop life. You made the world believe that hip hop is just about the grand hustle and making big dollars.
Many of you, underground weak rappers was stabbed in the soul of hip hop. How can you, clowns in the game, make people believe that you can bless a mic? Whatever your colors, you HAVE to be skilled and to be fantastic rap!
More strikingly, a large majority of you, worthless youths, have spat on you real hip hop Nas raps while revering so called rappers closer to pop artists than anything else!
However, I believe the hip hop in its essence is still alive. It will live on as long as the spirit of the shop Maurice Malone's Hip hop was brought. It survive, as the real people talk about real things. It survives, if only inexperienced but nevertheless skilled emcees will accept to learn from their predecessors.
Real hip hop is the reality of the street and can not be summarized in the commercial crap we see on MTV.
Hip Hop live on accept rappers think less about money and more about their art.
Hip hop has a future, but not without You, emcees, breakdancers, sprayers, DJs, listeners and anyone else involved in the rap game. It's all you.

Olodum the Revolt of the Drums $132.24 This dissertation is an analysis of the communication strategies of Olodum Cultural Group, an AfroBrazilian carnival organisation based in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Olodum is an organisation in the black movement in Brazil. It has a long range of activities aimed at fighting racism and bringing about social justice. Its most powerful voice is a massive percussion band playing sambareggae and other fused AfroBrazilian rhythms. The Olodum band has had great success on the international marked of socalled world music. Olodum also engages in other art forms, social and cultural projects, political debate, alternative education for children and local businesses. Olodum is also one of the main exponents of the most important tourist attraction in Salvador: the Afro Bahian Carnival and the continuous street parties. Using a model developed by the Brazilian anthropologist Roberto DaMatta, this dissertation shows how Olodum mixes different cultures and communicates through a dual social logic. This way, the organisation exposes racial asymmetry, create positive AfroBrazilian identities and to incite social change. 4 x 13 Drum Set Timbale $99.99 Combining the drumset with traditional timbales has become the norm rather than the exception. The reasons are many. When playing reggae, for example, the drummer can keep a loosely tensioned snare and strike timbales for the signature staggered-triplet rimshotsa timbre impossible to obtain from a loosely-tuned snare drum. For songo, the timbales inject authentic sounds and help the drummer emulate the sound of a complete percussion sectionthe same applies for mambo choruses, cha cha cha, and other Afro-Cuban styles. For players of world music, timbales contribute a distinct tone and offer a more defined pitch than double-headed drumkit toms. And now the fly in the ointment: Most timbales come in pairs that are not designed with the drumset in mindin terms of height, expanse or even tuning (traditional timbales are tuned with a wrench). Latin Percussion has designed new LP Drumset Timbales, with shallower shells constructed from high carbon plated-steel available in two sizes and depths. The tubular lugs allow ample space for cascara playingdrumstick against metal shell walls. Of course, those same reduced-depth shells encourage a wider variety of placement options. The LP Drumset Timbales emit clear, pitched tones that segue nicely into the drummers high toms, while head diameters of 12 and 13 occupy less real estate, allowing the drummer to sneak the drumsor just a single timbaleinto places where regular timbales would not fit. And then theres the killer rimshot, a stake to the heart of the Marshall stack guitarist. Steel shells provide the maximum sustain, brightness and clarity and will stand up to heavy, street sticksthanks, in part, to standard flanged drumset rims.Offered in two sizes, 12 and 13, and two depths, 4 and 5, LP Drumset Timbales are the answer to drummers who have been modifying conventional toms and roto-tom style drums for decades. Conveniently, they are offered individually. Take heed that while LP Drumset Timbales may be slightly reduced in size |

Bad as Me [Deluxe Version] $24.98 Bad as Me is Tom Waits’ first collection of new material in seven years. He and Kathleen Brennan — wife, co-songwriter, and production partner — have, at the latter’s insistence, come up with a tight-knit collection of short tunes, the longest is just over four minutes. This is a quick, insistent, and woolly aural road trip full of compelling stops and starts. While he’s kept his sonic experimentation — especially with percussion tracks — Waits has returned to blues, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, and jazz as source material. Instead of sprawl and squall, we get chug and choogle. For “Chicago” — via Clint Maedgen’s saxes, Keith Richards’ (who appears sporadically here) and Marc Ribot’s guitars, son Casey Waits’ drums, dad’s banjo, percussion and piano, and Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica (he appears numerous times here, too) — we get a 21st century take on vintage R&B. Indeed, one can picture Big Joe Turner fronting this clattering rush of grit and groove, and this album is all about groove. Augie Meyers appears on Vox organ and Flea on bass to guide Waits’ tablas and vocals on “Raised Right Men,” a 12-bar stagger filled with delightful lyrical clich? s from an America that has passed on into myth — Waits does nothing to de-mystify this; he just makes it greasy and danceable. The slow, spooky “Talking at the Same Time” is still in blues form albeit with ska-styled horns to make things more exotic, as Waits waxes about the current state of economic affairs. He showcases history’s circular nature as he bridges our national narrative from 1929-1941, and up to the present day: “Well it? s hard times for some/For others it? s sweet/Someone makes money when there? s blood in the street…Well we bailed out all the millionaires/They got the fruit/We got the rind…” Rockabilly rears its head on “Get Lost,” with David Hidalgo strutting a solid ’50s guitar snarl above the horns. Dawn Harms’ violin and Patrick Warren’s keyboards add textural dimension to H… |

Billy Taylor Jazz All-Stars concert at Carnegie Hall on 25 May 74 $9.98 To open this “52nd Street Revisited” program, emcee and eminent author Arnold Shaw provides a little background on that strip of real estate in midtown Manhattan where the bebop scene took hold back in the mid-1940s: “While Harlem was the incubator of bebop, it was 52nd Street that brought the music to the public, and in so doing, itself became a musical scene of musical conflict???Jimmy Ryan’s was the bastion of the two-beat crowd as The Three Deuces, Spotlight, Downbeat and Onyx provided a showcase for fanatics of the flatted fifth.” Shaw goes on to explain how the Oscar Pettiford-Dizzy Gillespie band was the first group on 52nd Street playing bebop. A young pianist named Bill Taylor, who was working at the Three Deuces with his own trio, subbed for Pettiford’s regular pianist George Wallington one night at the Onyx, igniting his life-long infatuation for these new harmonic and rhythmic concepts in jazz. Thirty years later, Taylor was on hand to celebrate that golden era of bebop in this special Carnegie Hall concert on May 25, 1974. Accompanying him are bebop stalwart Howard McGhee on trumpet, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax, Lyle Atkinson on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums. Together they burn through three bop staples frequently heard on 52nd Street back in the day — Charlie Parker’s chops-busting anthem “Donna Lee,” Thelonious Monk’s moody meditation “‘Round Midnight” and a rousing rendition of the popular Duke Ellington-Juan Tizol jamming vehicle, “Perdido.” Thomas’ irrepressibly swinging ride cymbal pulse fuels the heated proceedings on their sizzling rendition of “Donna Lee,” which opens with tight, blistering unison lines on the head between McGhee and Heath, who each turn in potent solos as the piece develops. Taylor (who would later be known as Dr. Billy Taylor) reveals the considerable influence of another 52nd Street regular, piano great Art Tatum, with a remarkably facile solo here. And in classic bop fashion, McGhee and Heath take turns exchanging whirlwin |

Inner City Blues $11.99 The story behind Grover Washington, Jr.’s first session date as a leader revolves around a sheer coincidence of being in the right place at the right time. The truth is, the date for Creed Taylor’s Kudu imprint was supposed to feature Hank Crawford in the soloist’s chair. Crawford couldn’t make the date and longtime sideman Washington got the nod. His being closely affiliated with organists Charles Earland and Johnny Hammond didn’t hurt, and his alto and tenor saxophones’ tone was instantly noticeable for both its song-like quality and Washington’s unique ability to dig deep into R&B territory for his expression of feeling. Released in 1971, produced by Taylor, and arranged and orchestrated by Bob James, the list of players in this band is equally impressive: James played Fender Rhodes, there’s Richard Tee on organ, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Idris Muhammad, then-new guitarist Eric Gale, percussionist Airto Moreira, Thad Jones and Eugene Young on trumpets, trombonist Wayne Andre, and baritone saxophonist Don Ashworth. James also added a violin section and a small vocal chorus on certain tracks.Inner City Blues kicks off with its title track, a burning version of the Marvin Gaye tune with Washington lending a heft and depth to it that reveals the sophistication of Gaye’s original. From Airto’s hand drums and the hi hat whispers of Muhammad to the chunky wah-wah guitar vamp and a funky bassline by Carter, it becomes clear that Washington’s methods of deep soul articulation on his horn extend into the heart of this mix. James decorated his charts with subtle organ flourishes and his piano, but this is early jazz-funk at best. While Miles Davis was abstracting jazz on the margins, Washington and his cohorts were keeping the music in the street, in the barroom, on the radio, and in the nightclubs and bowling alleys. The tune was a hit at a time when fusion was becoming widespread; free jazz from both sides of the Atlantic was considering itself the new standard bearer… |

John Kirby Sextet Tribute Band concert at Carnegie Hall on 25 May 74 $9.98 In 1974, Newport Jazz Festival impresario George Wein, in association with Carnegie Hall, formed the New York Jazz Repertory Company, a precursor of the Jazz at Lincoln Center repertory program headed up by Wynton Marsalis. With four musical directors – arrangers Sy Oliver and Gil Evans, and pianists Billy Taylor and Stanley Cowell – and a pool of 100 players, the NYJRC undertook an ambitious 15-concert series spread out over five months in its first year. One of those was this John Kirby Sextet tribute concert, led by trumpeter-arranger Sy Oliver, as part of a program called “52nd Street Revisited.” Back in the day, Kirby’s Sextet played at the Onyx Club on 52nd Street with a lineup that included Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Buster Baily on clarinet, Russel Procope on alto sax, Billy Kyle on piano, O’Neil Spencer on drums and Kirby on bass. Sy Oliver and his crew kick it off with an effervescent reading of Charlie Shavers’ “Undecided,” the Swing-era staple that was covered by everyone from Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Roy Eldridge, Art Tatum and Red Norvo to Django Reinhardt, Erroll Garner and Guy Lombardo. Next they jazz up the classics on a swinging rendition of Edvard Greig’s Peer Gynt Suite before heading into the hard driving swinger “Opus 5,” which features bristling solo turns from everyone in the group. Special guest vocalist Maxine Sullivan, who was married to Kirby from 1938 to 1941, appears on a string of hits associated with her from yesteryear, including the loping “Molly Malone,” the shuffling ditty “If I Had a Ribbon to Tie My Hair” and her signature song, “Loch Lomond,” a swinging midtempo take on the old Scottish folk melody that scored a big hit for Sullivan in 1939. Oliver and his musical colleagues then close the concert with a syncopated rendition of a contemporary number, Jule Styne’s “People,” a hit song that was introduced by Barbra Streisand in the 1964 Broadway musical Funny Girl. Bassist-bandleader Kirby played in the bands of Chick Webb, |
