Stringing Guitar Nylon

So after several years of use and recording in various products Zoom (H4 and H2 H4n) I thought I would share some tips and strategies I have found to be useful when making home recordings of my guitars sound. Some of them may seem a little simplistic, but so many times I have heard amateur sound recordings that might have sounded a lot better with just a little bit of care.
- First and foremost in All: Tune your guitar! If you are at all unsure how to tune or maybe your just a little lazy side when it comes to this please take a tuner and use one. There are some great available for the iPhone now too!
- Change the string! Now this one is a little more tricky, and depends on personal taste. When the recording of nylon string guitars might be better to replace the string of 5 or 6 days before a recording session and give the string a little time to "break". This will help to reduce string noise (like when you slide the neck) and give the bass strings of a slightly more tender vibe where a lot of classical / nylon guitar enthusiasts enjoy. It will also give them time to stretch out and improve your tuning stability. When it comes to recording steel string, especially if you are doing it in a band setting, I say replace them more often possible, they take very little time to stretch out and bright features of the new string also lends itself to the steel string sound recordings. In both cases: nylon or steel strings however, dead string does not record well, will not tune properly and destruction is what might otherwise be a very good record!
- What a pick? Now I realize that we all have our preferred pick that we are comfortable with and enjoy the tone it produces, and in a live setting is absolutely fine (most valuable indeed!). However, when you record keep in mind that you are able to capture a certain tone exactly how you want and the setting is the perfect time to experiment with different gauges of the pick. Maybe your regular pick allows you to produce a beautiful fat singing lead tone but may fall a little short when it comes to strumming. Experiment here and you can really up the Ante! These little details like this that make all the difference in the world!
- Placement, placement, placement! It is so easy to get into a rut when it comes to microphone placement, especially if you're a bedroom recorder or live in a smaller apartment. We tend to "set it and forget" always record the exact same place. You'd be amazed at the difference in color tone by just sitting back a few feet away from the mic than you usually do! How about recording in the bathroom? On your balcony? Back to your childhood and build a fort out of blankets and couch cushions! The opportunities are really endless if you use your imagination and again a good record all about little details! I read scientific articles that claim that the human brain recognizes the timbre (sound quality) of a recording more than it actually identifies himself music! So spend some time!
- Make, model and quality of your instrument. Have you ever heard the saying "you can not polish a tird?" well these are some ways this is very true, you're not going to make your 100 dollar sound Yamaha like a 6000 dollar custom builder. But play your instrument might, sometimes cheaper guitars have a very nice throaty / sound and can midrangy easy to use it to your advantage. Also try and meet as many other guitar player as you and your trading instruments. The existence of different guitars available makes a huge difference in what you can get your recording gear and it is also very inspiring!
I hope some These tips will help, remember recording anything is a journey and need to be prepared to experiment as much as possible to find a excellent sound, whatever that be!

You can put steel strings on a nylon-string guitar?
I like the strings of steel but do not want to get a new guitar. Was my only option?
Do not Ever put a string of steel with a nylon string guitar. Steel strings have many times more than the tension nylon string. The body nylon string guitars are braced lighter than their steel cousins chord. If you put steel strings on a guitar designed for nylon, they were "eaten" at the top up as well as warp the neck. Because they are so attached, you'd (luckily) have a hard time even getting string of steel to fit. Enjoy your nylon string guitar for what it is, and if you want to play steel strings, buy a guitar designed for them.
