 1000 Years of Popular Music

1000 Years of Popular Music

$28.98

As the year 2000 loomed on the horizon, Playboy Magazine took it upon itself to ask a number of leading musicians to name the greatest songs of the soon-to-be-completed millennium. One of the musos queried was Richard Thompson, and while many of his comrades couldn’t be bothered to go further back than 1940 in their overview of musical history, the scholarly Thompson took the notion seriously enough to extend his own list of notable songs as far back as 1068 A.D. While Playboy never ended up printing Thompson’s list, the notion made enough of an impression on him that he put together a special show in which he guided his audience through his own version of the greatest hits of the past ten centuries. 1000 Years of Popular Music is culled from recordings of Thompson’s concert series of the same name, and beyond the novelty value of the set list (from the oldest round in the English language to Britney Spears in a mere 76 minutes!), it also offers a rare look at Thompson the interpretive musician, as well as lends a fascinating perspective on his musical influences. As one might expect, the early innings are dominated by the British folk tradition, with “King Henry V’s Conquest of France” and “Blackleg Miner” suggesting where Thompson’s melodic sense first took root, and other tunes demonstrating how operetta and the British music halls absorbed and refined similar themes. Thompson also indulges his passion for classic jazz of the 1930s and ’40s on some Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong chestnuts, and wraps up by following rock & roll through Jerry Lee Lewis, the Who, and the Beatles to Prince and Britney Spears (“Oops! I Did It Again,” of which Thompson writes, “Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song”). Considering that precious few of these songs were meant to be performed by a solo acoustic guitar, Thompson’s arrangements are inventive and effective; whether he’s going for laughs or drama, he gets the most from his material. (He’s also fortunat…

 Any Given Thursday [Video/DVD]

Any Given Thursday [Video/DVD]

$12.99

Recorded in September of 2002 in Birmingham, AL, John Mayer’s Any Given Thursday DVD chronicles a day in the life of his tour. Mayer’s juxtaposition between being a musician and a personality is blurred most during his live shows. Is he the consummate guitar hero exemplified when he plays a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny,” or is he the teen idol that the pubescent girls shriek for after he plays “Your Body Is a Wonderland”? Regardless of your perception, there is no denying that he possesses the ability to satisfy every audience member. After a smattering of songs from Room for Squares, he dismisses his bandmates and gets back to his early days as a solo performer. This is where Mayer proves that he is more than the sum of radio hits that have elevated him into the larger venues. Launching into an acoustic version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle,” he makes this song his own. Any Given Thursday will definitely give you a new respect for Mayer’s ability to make his studio recordings come alive in a fresh new way. The bonus features include a look at the soundcheck and an interview with Mayer the day after the show, where he presents a consciousness about his music that is gnostic beyond his years. The most intriguing bonus feature on the DVD is the commentary by Mayer. It’s not often that you get a play-by-play of a performer’s thought process while he is on-stage. He lends his perspective on everything from the quirky faces he makes while singing to the reasons for his set list. This commentary alone is worth the price of the DVD. ~ Erik Crawford, Rovi

Dave Loggins concert at Record Plant on 10 Jul 74

Dave Loggins concert at Record Plant on 10 Jul 74

$4.98

Tennessee born singer-songwriter Dave Loggins has had his songs recorded by a long list of pop, folk and especially country music stars such as Alabama, Reba McEntire, Toby Keith, Wynonna Judd and many others, earning himself recognition by the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall Of Fame. Loggins’ professional career began in the early 1970s, when he relocated to Nashville and signed a deal with MCA Music Publishing. In 1971, Loggins scored his first Top 10 hit on the Pop charts, when Three Dog Night recorded “Pieces Of April.” The following year, Loggins signed his first recording deal with Vanguard Records. In 1972, he released his debut album, Personal Belongings, which was followed in 1974 by Apprentice in a Musical Workshop. The latter album included a moving sentimental ballad that would soon define his career. “Please Come To Boston” sailed up the Pop charts, winning Loggins a Grammy for best male vocal performance. This song would be covered by many artists, including Joan Baez, who prominently featured the song during her sets on Bob Dylan’s legendary Rolling Thunder Revue Tour the following year. This Record Plant performance, featuring Loggins performing solo acoustic before a small in-studio audience, captures him at that pivotal time in 1974, when he was just beginning to be recognized for “Please Come To Boston.” Stripped down to just vocals and acoustic guitar, this rare live recording provides an intimate glimpse at Loggins as he was beginning to establish his reputation. The set opens with Loggins’ own rendition of “Pieces Of April” and closes with his traveling song, “Touch Of Pennsylvania,” both originally featured on his debut album. In between are two songs from his sophomore album; the country flavored ode to an aging female barfly, “Sunset Woman,” as well as his biggest hit, the aforementioned “Please Come To Boston.” A light soft-pop love song that was not included on either of his albums, “Let Me Down Easy” rounds out this set. Live at Montreux 2005

Live at Montreux 2005

$14.98

Steve Earle delivers a solo acoustic set on this live disc, recorded during an appearance at the 2005 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. There are already a handful of Steve Earle live albums on the market (most notably 2003′s Just an American Boy), and Live at Montreux 2005 doesn’t add much to his repertoire; while Earle is a captivating live performer on a good night, he works best with a band behind him, and the “one guy with his guitar” format of this recording doesn’t show the man to his best advantage. Earle doesn’t do himself any favors in this regard with his set list, playing several songs that don’t fare especially well with only an acoustic guitar to prop them up, in particular “Condi Condi,” “What’s a Simple Man to Do,” and “The Revolution Starts Now.” Perhaps aware that he was performing for an audience not fluent in English, Earle holds back on the between-song stories that add so much to the flavor of his live shows (or perhaps they were just edited out for CD release), and though Earle is in good voice on these songs, he doesn’t seem to hit fifth gear on this set — this doesn’t catch fire the way a good Steve Earle show does. Still, the man is one of America’s best living songwriters, and the high points here not only show how great his work can be but the care and intelligence with which Earle can tell his stories, and hearing him sing “Ellis Unit One,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” and “Jerusalem” is a treat. Royal fans will enjoy Live at Montreux 2005, but other folks interested in a Steve Earle live set would do better to try Just an American Boy instead. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

 Stroke: Songs For Chris Knox

Stroke: Songs For Chris Knox

$14.98

Chris Knox is one of the pillars of New Zealand? s indie rock music scene. Starting with his band Toy Love through his duo Tall Dwarfs and his solo work, he? s been making interesting, challenging records for almost 30 years. When he suffered a stroke in late 2009, it was a shock, but soon Knox? s musical friends and fans rallied support and Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox was born. Just looking at the list of contributors gives you an idea of how highly regarded Knox? s work is. Luminaries of the Flying Nun records stable (the Bats, the Chills, the Kilgour brothers) rub shoulders with American indie rock legends (Yo La Tengo, Lambchop, the Mountain Goats, Lou Barlow), big names like Neil Finn and Stephin Merritt contribute songs, and people who haven? t been heard from much lately show up to pay respect (Shayne Carter of Straitjacket Fits, Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel). It? s no real surprise that the songs that sound the best are the versions done by the New Zealand acts themselves, there? s something sort of magical about the island that gives songs recorded there a feel that isn? t easy to re-create. The Chills, the Bats and relative newcomers the Mint Chicks all have that magic. So do the Verlaines, the Bleeding Allstars, and Alec Bathgate (who, as Knox? s partner in Tall Dwarfs, also deserves some tribute). A couple of the outside artists like Jay Reatard (who had planned to work with Knox at one point) also do a fine job of capturing it. Most of the North American contingent seems satisfied to just turn in stripped-down versions of Knox’s songs, which is fine but also something of a let down. Fans expecting Mangum’s contribution to be anything more than him and an acoustic guitar may be let down, too, for example. That being said, Bill Callahan’s “Lapse” is a hauntingly beautiful, epic-length take on the song that conjures up the ghost of Fred Neil. Yo La Tengo also turns in a lovely song, and Lou Barlow’s “Song of the Tall Poppy” does a fin…

 USED: Celtic Spirit [Narada]

USED: Celtic Spirit [Narada]

$7.98

Compilations of Celtic music clog candle store endcaps. They’re stacked in point of purchase tents adjacent to cash registers, come free with two pounds of coffee, and generally try to cash in on the music’s inherent grace. Too often, though, these comps are poorly executed pretenders with a connection to Celtic music that can only be described as tenuous. Narada’s Celtic Spirit is different in that it looks at Celtic music seriously, and not just commercially. It draws on the stark yet uplifting music of the early Celtic liturgy, supplementing stoic, ethereal vocal tracks from Connie Dover (“Ubi Caritas”) and ? ine Minogue (“Puer Natus”) with the solo acoustic guitar of William Coulter (“B? a losa, im Chro? -se”) and “Be Thou My Vision,” a tin whistle and piano-led number from Anjali Quartet. Sheena Wellington balances the album’s echoing stillness with the warm “Christ Child’s Lullaby,” but the song is sequenced next to the medieval-tinged “Rosa Mystica,” which Theresa Schroeder-Sheker picks out on a solitary harp. All in all, Celtic Spirit might not please the casual listener looking for some lighthearted jigs and reels. It takes its Celtic-ness seriously, and as a result brings added gravity to the set list. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
