A Short Introduction to the Amazon Rainforest
An old Indian legend says God is not done in the Amazon when people showed up. So, the story goes, God decided to leave, expecting people not last very long, when he would return to finish his work. Now, more than 20 million people live not finished work that stretches from the Andes to the west in the Atlantic in the east, from the Guyana Plateau to the north from the Brazilian savannah in the south. It's size is difficult, which contains as:
- 5% of world land.
- 20% of global fresh water reserves.
- 1 / 3 of the world's forests.
- 40% of South America.
- 60% of Brazil.
- 0.4% of the global population.
Despite being a large continuous forest, the Amazon is highly differentiated from the geophysical and ecological perspectives. Clear examples curious traveler will discover the differently colored rivers, from the deep black waters of the river Negro in the yellow muddy waters of the Solimoes, and their excellent meeting where the two colors in travel for many miles, side-by-side without ever mixing. And such meeting, the traveler is likely to also meet the votes Rosa, the pre-historic pink dolphins of the Amazon, figure of so many legends and stories forbidden in the region. In fact, the traveler encounters one of the last frontiers of the very few.
Multiple co-existing ecosystems alongside and integrated with one another, while flooded forests and floodplains (locally known as igapó and varzea) cover 5% of the region, the remaining forest land terrain comprises companies. There are five distinct regions, with specific geographical as well as biological characteristics in each one: Amazon Atlantic, with coastal swamps along the border of the Brazilian states of Para and Amapa in Brazil, the central floodplain, which stretches from the Atlantic all the way in Peru, following the footsteps of the Amazon River, northern plateau, a land of poor soils and, farther north one goes, the more rocky and mountainous it becomes; the southern basin, a land of fertile soils and muddy river wild, and cis-Andine Amazon, a transition zone that ends in steep snowy slopes of the Andes. A typical four square mile patch Harbors anywhere in the Amazon more than 1500 species of flowering plants, 750 trees, 125 mammals, 400 birds, 100 reptiles, 60 amphibians, and 150 of butterflies. Amazingly, the crown of a single tree, probably over 50 feet tall, can play host to more than five thousand species of insects.
land This is a region marked by biological, geologic, economic and social differences; century explorers have documented such. For example, many may recall the familiar legend of the Amazon women, a myth founded the first person to travel from the Atlantic Ocean, Francisco de Orellana purportedly experienced the ferocious warrior women in 1542. Since then, other adventurers, scientists and hope-seekers have traveled, and occupyied studyied region, even with varying degrees of success. Among these, the most unusual include:
- Alexander von Humboldt, who mapped the poem connecting the Orinoco basin in Venezuela to the Amazon basin, the 300-mile long Casiquiare Canal, available for visits even now only the most adventurous travelers.
- Henry Walter Bates and Alfred Russell Wallace, who collectively made one of the most productive natural history discoveries. Alfred was later co-discover (with Darwin) the theory of evolution.
- Jacques Cousteau, the fearless adventurer and modern scientists who, as far as I know, is the only person with enough the courage to have swum in a school of piranhas.
Visit the Amazon one can not help but appreciate the difficulties and wonders the explorers experienced. From the airplane, the green carpet seem eternal and peaceful, the soil, it is anything but. First traveler would notice chirps, beeps, squawks, and the plethora of other strange sounds that come from nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Next, the smells of freshness and flowering plant mix in the musty smell of decaying vegetation, marking the unending cycle of life and death battle. Locate and one sees the static results of a century-long to fight for the light: the vines intertwine in trees, branches reaching higher and higher outsmart each other in a desperate fight for sunlight. So well against it a place on earth is likely to have the sun shine directly on it one time only every 50 years, the point at which some surrounding trees finally gives up, died, dropped to the ground and leaves an opening in the canopy, a shred of hope filled the newborn. Living in such unimagined prosperity, yet overwhelming.
Alongside such natural exuberance, more than 20 million people live. The history of human occupation in the Amazon stretches back 11,000 years, around Monte Alegre, where archaeological sites were uncovered, noting the presence of fairly complex community much earlier than usual and expected in a region where their lives are not considered possible just a few years ago. Splitting the traveler a few days to spare can take a small plane from Santarém Monte Alegre to visit the natives' wall paintings still visible today. Ancient Indian population is still present, although outsiders are rarely invited to visit. Though shocking to some, there several small Indian tribes that have never experienced or defined by us, Westerners, it is not a tribute to our inexperience, but rather than the amazing size of the forest.
The larger, non-native to work, however, came with the discovery of important natural products: notably, rubber. Hevea Brasiliensis most, the local seringueira known, is the tree that yields valuable products as easy Charles Goodyear invented the rubber vulcanization process in 1839. At the end of the 19th century, the industry producing bicycles and vehicles on record pace, the market for indeniably hot rubber. A wealth of Manaus, then the center of the rubber trade, is legendary, this is the first city in South America with electricity. Stones, telephone system, Tramways are all imported from Europe, including crystal chandeliers, pianos, champagne and caviar. The main standing reminder of this season is the Teatro Amazonas, the opera house in Manaus. For a population of only 30 thousand, the Opera House can sit and 1600 contained glass, marble, and other materials imported from well-off in Europe. As wealth hid the extreme hardship faced by the rubber tappers, as the trees scattered along the forest and resisted multiple attempts of domestication to the field. Remains of the dreams of domestication can be seen in Fordlândia today, aptly named after U.S. industrialist Henry Ford, along the banks of the Tapajos river.
Today, Brazilian development is encroaching on the southern borders of the Amazon. Such land is fertile, and with the recent growth in agriculture in tropical climates, population growth and the appreciation of commodities in international markets, the economy has shifted. Over the past five years, deforestation has ranged between 15 and 26,000 squared kilometers in Brazil. Put in perspective, the Brazilian part of the Amazon is approximately 3.6 million square kilometers, so the current rate is between 0.4% and 0.7% per years, indeed worrisome. It is estimated that deforestation has reached approximately 20% of the region, mainly to give way to animal breeding in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, Rondônia, and for. The socio-economic processes in play is a huge migration from southern states in Brazil, where the land is mostly occupied, south Amazon, which has abundant land and few people.
Despite global growth, a look at the people of the Amazon will also reveal an unenviable socio-economic situation. The historic drought of 2005, hunger, disease and isolation threatened riverside population. In large cities, the traveler will uncover squatters and poor living conditions.

Debussy title why his piano composition "Le Petit Negre (the little negro)?
It was originally intended to become the sixth composition in a collection called "The Children's Corner" loosely based on something in the room her daughter's and childhood. It is about a black doll called a "golliwog". It was around the turn of the century once (1900) and jazz and jazz rhythms had just become popular and they are related to black people. Scott Joplin (black composer) is writing ragtime music around the same time. Le Petit Negre's ragtime rhythm. It was changed to "The Children's Corner" by "The golliwog's Cakewalk" and Le Petit Negre became a stand-only piece. Choros & Alegria $17.98 Adventure Music is promoting Choros & Alegria, its beautifully rendered follow-up to 2004′s critically acclaimed first tribute to behind-the-scenes Brazilian musical genius Moacir Santos (Ouro Negro), with the tag line: “You don’t have to apologize if you don’t know who he is.” The moral of this beautiful Brazilian story is, you don’t have to be a global legend like Sergio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, or Ivan Lins to inspire the Brazilian music world. A composer, arranger, reed player, and teacher for many decades, Santos is considered a living monument to the musical treasures that have come from his country. Producers Mario Adnet and Ze Nogueira, who also presented the first collection, have put together magical, often orchestrated traditional arrangements of never before recorded Santos tunes from various decades, starting in the ’40s (the seductive trumpet-spiced “Cleonix”) and continuing through 1991′s lush piano-choir anthem “Felipe.” Perfectly in line with the spirit of discovery that drives the 15-song collection, most of the musicians are famed Rio cats you’ve never heard of, with the notable exception of guitarist Ricardo Silveira and Wynton Marsalis. The material was recorded in 2005 in Rio and S? o Paulo under the direct supervision of the 79-year-old Moacir, who is no doubt too old to tour but can’t help but be pleased by the newfound attention given this most precious work. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi |

Paradise and Lunch $13.96 Ry Cooder understands that a great song is a great song, whether it was written before the Depression or last week. Still, at the same time he isn’t afraid to explore new avenues and possibilities for the material. Like his three previous records, Paradise and Lunch is filled with treasures which become part of a world where eras and styles converge without ever sounding forced or contrived. One may think that an album that contains a traditional railroad song, tunes by assorted blues greats, and a Negro spiritual alongside selections by the likes of Bobby Womack, Burt Bacharach, and Little Milton may lack cohesiveness or merely come across as a history lesson, but to Cooder this music is all part of the same fabric and is as relevant and accessible as anything else that may be happening at the time. No matter when it was written or how it may have been done in the past, the tracks, led by Cooder’s brilliant guitar, are taken to new territory where they can coexist. It’s as if Washington Phillips’ “Tattler” could have shared a place on the charts with Womack’s “It’s All Over Now” or Little Milton’s “If Walls Could Talk.” That he’s successful on these, as well as the Salvation Army march of “Jesus on the Mainline” or the funky, gospel feel of Blind Willie McTell’s “Married Man’s a Fool,” is not only a credit to Cooder’s talent and ingenuity as an arranger and bandleader, but also to the songs themselves. The album closes with its most stripped-down track, an acoustic guitar and piano duet with jazz legend Earl “Fatha” Hines on the Blind Blake classic “Ditty Wah Ditty.” Here both musicians are given plenty of room to showcase their instrumental prowess, and the results are nothing short of stunning. Eclectic, intelligent, and thoroughly entertaining, Paradise and Lunch remains Ry Cooder’s masterpiece. ~ Brett Hartenbach, Rovi |

Quinteplus $40.98 Quinteplus, the Argentine jazz quintet represented on this killer reissue of material dating back to 1972, had their roots in the country’s New Jazz Collective, which was founded in the early ’60s. Gato Barbieri, his brother Reuben, Jorge “Negro” Gonzalez, and Santiago Giaccobe were all members of the collective. The latter two, on bass and keyboards respectively, went on to form Quinteplus with saxophonist Jorge Anders, trumpeter Gustavo Bergalli, and drummer Noberto “Pocho” Lapouble. The group recorded one studio album in 1971; it was released on EMI in 1972 and makes up the first six tracks of this set. The latter four tunes here were recorded live in late 1972 with a lineup that subbed Jorge Cutello on reeds and added electric guitarist Rolando Lew. These final four tracks went unreleased until Melopea issued them in 1980. Spain’s great reissue label Vampisoul — being the imprint of all things strange, exotic, and wonderful — assembled all ten cuts for this self-titled release on CD and vinyl. The sound of Quinteplus was deeply rooted in the late-’60s funky soul-jazz of Blue Note and Prestige. Rhodes piano is used almost exclusively here, and electric bass as much as the upright. Rhythmically, though, Quinteplus were superior to a lot of what Blue Note issued at the time. Check the rhythm section on some of these cuts — “El Marques” comes immediately to mind — and you’d swear it was some date assembled by Lee Morgan or Horace Silver. Latin rhythms and polyrhythms from Argentine folk music and Afro-Cuban rhumba as well as hard bop and soul abound in uptempo grooves like “Loberman, el Hombre Loco” or shimmer and dance with subtly textured melodic ideas on the folkish ballad “Zamba de Mis Pagos.” Three of the latter four tunes are extended workouts; they are much more invested in laying out funky rhythms, vamps, and snaky grooves, and the horn players are both tough soloists. The larger rhythm section — with additional coloration by wah-wah guitar… |

USED: In the Spur of the Moment $7.98 In the Spur of the Moment, Steve Turre’s debut release for Telarc Jazz, is a technically precise and elegant musical adventure through three jazz styles in which Steve Turre expresses his musical personalities in a quartet setting. In the first setting, he plays the blues in jazz with the legendary Ray Charles on piano, Peter Turre on drums, and Peter Washington on bass. The section features two original compositions by Steve titled “Ray’s Collard Greens,” an authentic 12-bar blues, and “Duke Rays,” a song based on Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone,” for which Steve uses Ellington’s changes but has written a new melody. “Misty” and “The Way You Look Tonight” round out the section, but are featured with the same approach to the blues. The second section of In the Spur of the Moment features Stephen Scott on piano in a modern and modal setting. His third musical setting stars Turre and Chucho Valdes playing Afro-Cuban sounds in a set that also features Peter Turre on drums, Buster Williams on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and the great, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums and percussion. This section shows Turre at his zenith as an assured leader and sensitive collaborator with exciting accompaniment by Chucho plus the string quartet, and Quartette Indigo on “Claudia.” In the Spur of the Moment concludes with an exciting finale that features Turre putting his brilliant trombone and shell skills to the test on the exciting jam, “Descarga Ahora.” This CD is an glowing example of Steve Turre’s exceptional finesse in the many styles of jazz. ~ Paula Edelstein, Rovi |

USED: The Negro Inside Me $4.99 Something of a holding pattern. On this six-song EP, Adamson extrapolates from contemporary black dance beats, samples his American publicist’s answering machine message and Jane Birkin’s hit “Je T’Aime,” and throws in lounge jazz piano bits and more. The pieces aren’t that striking, and one gets the sense that he’s tossing out some ideas to play with in the interim between full-length scores/albums. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide |
