West Ridge Academy - Discover That Delicate Balance Of Taste And Freedom In Music
Did your parents say it to you? On the other hand, have you also said the same to your kids despite the fact that you once promised yourself that you wouldn't do it to them? Chances are high that your grandparents could have said it to your parents. From Greenday and Oasis to Pearl Jam and the Beastie Boys. From Fleetwood Mac and Queen to Guns N Roses and Bon Jovi. From Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan to Engelbert Humperdinck and BB King. For decades, parents around the world have been telling their kids “that’s not music” and have often found themselves screaming, “Turn off that noise!”Of course, parents aren’t the only ones who struggle when listening to another generation’s music. If you ask any teen about music they’ll tell you how painful it is to be trapped in a car or other confined space with their parents listening to “their” music. "What a bore." "It's mushy." "It's not old, it's just 'classic'.In the same token that you may have protested years ago, kids today will argue that their parents just don't "dig" their kind of music.
Negotiating the many differences of opinion between parents and teens can feel like navigating a minefield. It’s not unusual for disagreements over music to exacerbate rifts in families. Understanding why teens like the music they do, and knowing what parents can do if they don’t approve of their child’s music choices, has the potential to bring families together. Without a doubt, music plays a powerful part in molding a teenager's life.
Kids have this primal connection with music, that even experts concede that it gives a much needed voice to each and every generation. Reminisce back to your high school days and try to remember the music that you were listening then and how you and your friends truly felt that your favorite songs were describing you or the things you were going through at the time. Chris Woods, West Ridge Academy's music teacher says that, "music has the ability to communicate the deepest feelings of our hearts; the feelings of our souls, essentially". "It has the tendency to make you smile, or cry, experience longing and excitement, anger, disappointment, and yes, even peacefulness. Music has proven to be an effective medium which allows its creator to communicate ideas and emotions to the person listening to it."Glance over the playlist of your teen in his or her iPod and you'll be taking a peek into what your teen actually values in his life.
There is hope for those parents who don’t like the music their children are listening to. It has been noted that teens are more interested in the music's rhythm and beats, rather than its lyrics. “A lot of our kids today like to listen to hip hop and rap music. It is my belief that this can be attributed to the catchy rhythmic structure of hip hop and rap music, " according to Woods. And, due to the tendency of teens to change their musical tastes from time to time, Woods advises parents to stay patient.
However, there are also deliberately malicious songs with harmful messages which you should try to keep away from your teens. It is critical for parents to establish clear standards for music, such as avoiding songs with violent lyrics, overt sexual messages, or profanity. Once you have made these guidelines perfectly clear to your teens, they may go ahead and be exposed to different music genres so long as they don't violate the agreed boundaries. Agreeing to occasionally share and listen to each other’s music can help build bridges and minimize disputes. By allowing their children the freedom to choose their own music while at the same time establishing clear boundaries, parents and teenagers are forging towards a more positive direction.
West Ridge Academy's students learn from Mr. Woods about the importance of music and its part in expressing themselves across different musical genres. At the end of the course, some of the students even record their own songs. Being able to give life to their ideas and emotions through music can be a very liberating and touching experience for teens. An amused Woods said, "I was pleasantly surprised at the number of spiritual songs, or reflective songs that the kids wrote". "I believe that their musical training here in West Ridge Academy helped them to address that creative aspect within themselves which they really needed to acknowledge".

The Early Mandolin $58.7 The name mandolin was used to refer to two quite different instruments: the gutstringed mandolino, played with the fingers, and the later metalstringed Neapolitan mandoline, which was played with a plectrum. This is the first book devoted exclusively to these two early instruments about which information in reference books is scant and often erroneous. The authors uncover their rich and varied musical history, examining contemporary playing techniques and revealing the full extent of the instruments individual repertories, which include works by Vivaldi, Sammartini, Stamitz, and Beethoven. The books ultimate aim is to help todays players to produce artistically satisfying performances through an understanding of the nature and historical playing style of these unjustly neglected instruments. Bluegrass Number 1? s: A Collection Of Chart Topping Songs $17.98 The idea of bluegrass “hits” seems like an anomaly, but on this two-disc, 26-song collection, some of the finest contemporary pickers and singers show their wares. And they’re good wares, to say the least. Whether it’s on the introductory tune, “Lonesome Wind Blues” by Rhonda Vincent, or the country leanings of “We’re Steppin’ Out Tonight” by Bobby Hicks with Del McCoury, the first disc has a very impressive flow to it. At times, it’s not the mandolin or banjo-blazing songs in the vein of Ricky Skaggs or Bill Monroe, but the somber, folk-sy dirges like “Who Will Watch the Home Place” that are instantly attractive. Later on is another gem from Lynn Morris called “Mama’s Hand,” which brings to mind early Dolly Parton. The fun-loving, boogie-driven “Thirty Years of Farming” results in a grin-inducing tune, despite singing about the problems of the American farmer. Alison Krauss lends her trademark sound on “New Fool,”, a mid-tempo tune rounded out by her stellar supporting cast. Bandmember Dan Tyminski gives a good performance on the laid-back “Carry Me Across the Mountain.” This is in direct contrast to the old-school, rollicking toe-tapper “Riding the Danville Pike,” courtesy of Blue Highway. Perhaps the highlight is “Bed by the Window” by James King, which sounds like Hank Williams or Vern Gosdin. Laurie Lewis also brings to life “Tall Pines,” which is more of a roots-tinted tune than traditional bluegrass. More of the traditional influences are felt on the high yodeling of “I’ve Been So Lonesome.” A second disc consisting of eight tunes begins with the rousing instrumental “Whistling Rufus,” by Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland. Open Road has the blueprint down pat, sounding as if they’re performing around one microphone with a single dim light bulb overhead during “I’m Not Perfect.” One of the better tunes on this second disc is the Gillian Welch-like rendition of “My Warfare Will Soon Be Over,” by Ginny Hawker. Only “Goin’ Where I’… |

Carrying On $16.98 Contemporary bluegrass has as much in common with older styles of country as it does bluegrass, and seems to succeed by combining instrumental rusticity (banjo, mandolin) with smooth vocals. Ralph Stanley II comes from bluegrass royalty and tours as part of his father’s band, but he’s updated the old Stanley style and songs for the 21st century. Carrying On, then, includes mostly classic material from the Stanleys (Carter and Ralph), A.P. Carter, and Bascom Lamar Lunsford presented in a contemporary style. There are also a couple of originals co-written by Stanley II. He’s joined for solid versions of “Single Girl,” “Mountain Dew,” and “Ain’t It Hard” by mandolinist John Rigsby, guitarist James Alan Shelton, banjoist Steve Sparkman, fiddler Tim Crouch, guitarist R.J. Rigsby, and bassist David Smith. There’s also time on Carrying On for religion on “Welcoming Tomb” and “Map of God’s Highway,” and a bit of patriotism on “Are You Proud of America.” The only small complaint is that a song called “Pretty Woman” sounds a lot like a revamped version of the lead cut, “Ain’t It Hard.” Stanley fans — of the father or the son — and contemporary bluegrass lovers will be glad the family’s carrying the tradition on. ~ Ronnie D. Dead Reckoning $12.99 The Builders and Butchers combine folksy Americana with a hybrid of Celtic and Southern gothic traditions, creating a sound that doesn? t evoke one specific location as much as a patchwork of long-forgotten places. The guys keep things loose on their third album, Dead Reckoning, whose 12 songs were recorded in a series of live takes with few overdubs. The result isn? t as lushly textured as Salvation Is a Deep Dark Well, which found the Builders beefing up their old-time folk songs with 21st century production, but it? s far more representative of their live show. Apart from guest performers Amanda Lawrence and Zy Orange Lynn, both of whom add string parts to the album, Dead Reckoning is a stripped-down effort, with acoustic instruments taking precedence over their electric counterparts and a sense of raw, off-the-cuff energy reigning supreme. The Builders and the Butchers still brew up an expansive sound on the shanty-esque ? It Came From the Sea? and the country-rocking ? Black Elevator,? but they also know how to scale things back. ? Blood for You? features little more than a cappella vocals and homemade percussion (which sounds like someone banging a 2X4 against the wall), while ? All Away? keeps things simple with guitar, mandolin, and light organ. It? s hard not to draw parallels to the Decemberists — fellow Portland residents whose frontman, Colin Meloy, shares a strikingly similar voice with frontman Ryan Sollee — but Dead Reckoning is further proof that the Builders and Butchers are building their own identity. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi |

EP $9.99 Based on its length (just under half an hour), Will Kimbrough’s self-titled offering in 2007 is either a really short album or a very long EP. It is billed as the latter, and given how much session work Kimbrough does as a guitarist for country artists, it’s entirely possible he didn’t have time to put together more than these eight songs. They are enough, however, to whet the appetite of any curious listener and leave any serious fan salivating for more. Though the term “Americana” is the kiss of death for most artists these days (because it would appear to be a catchall that doesn’t fit anywhere else), Kimbrough’s music comes right from the heart of traditional American song forms: Appalachian balladry, raw bluegrass, hillbilly blues, rock & roll, and folk songs. The contrast between the guitars and cello of the bluesy back-porch “Eden Prairie” and the sheer folk waltz of “Interstate,” with guitar, mandolin, brushed drums, and upright bass, are two cases in point. “Horseshoe Lake” may be played on acoustic guitars, mandos, upright bass, and cello, but it walks through the same kind of singer/songwriter rock Bruce Springsteen delved into on Tunnel of Love — without the slick production. “Yellow Mama” is a shimmering primitive ballad with beautiful slide guitar and banjo work. It’s a prayer, a protest song, and a criminal ballad, all rolled into one. “Half a Man,” a midtempo shuffling acoustic ballad with a full band, sounds utterly lush in comparison to its predecessors. The closer, “Love Is the Solution,” with its lonesome strings and spoken word lyric, is a blues from a different era. Its message is profound, spelled out in simple terms that could have been written by Tom Russell, and shows his influence. It’s hard to tell where a recording like this one might drop — and hopefully not into obscurity. These are wonderfully written and executed songs: sparse yet full of literacy, emotion, and a primitive’s attitude to modern invention, though th… |

I-94 Blues $17.98 The Cash Box Kings are hard to pigeonhole. Like Roomful of Blues and Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, the band mines the sounds of the past, loosely basing its style on the early records put out by the Chess and Sun labels. They also blend in New Orleans second-line rhumba, acoustic Delta and country blues, swing, blues-rock, and other influences. They gig regularly around the Chicago area and put on a live show that shows off their first-class chops with an off-the-cuff feel that seems almost improvised. Two fine vocalists front the band. Joe Nosek, who is also a remarkable harp player and songwriter, has an aggressive vocal approach, while Oscar Wilson harks back to the mellow Kansas City blues shouters. Their complementary styles give the band an impressive flexibility as they deliver 15 smokin’ tunes — ten originals that sound like they’re classics and five well-chosen covers. “Default Boogie” is, as you’d expect, a topical boogie tune with Wilson delivering a sardonic lead vocal and Billy Flynn adding some chiming blues mandolin. Nosek sings “Mellow Chick Swing,” which is driven by Joel Paterson’s acoustic guitar, mixed up to play neatly off of Barrelhouse Chuck’s thumping piano. “St. Paul Wintertime Blues” is a slow dirty Chicago blues with a weary vocal from Nosek and Paterson’s stinging slide guitar hot enough to raise blisters. “Hittin on My Baby” is an acoustic country shuffle based on “Diggin’ My Potatoes.” Paterson’s lead guitar lines are alternately jazzy and down-home; Jimmy Sutton takes the song home with a slappin’ standup bass solo. They close the album with a jump blues version of Willie McTell’s “Warm It Up to Me,” featuring Barrelhouse Chuck’s vigorous piano fills and Nosek’s wailing harp and seductive vocals. ~ j. poet, Rovi |
