The History Of Rap And Hip Hop Music

Make Your Own Hip Hop Beats

Hip-hop music has been the catalyst for the whole hip-hop culture, it’s a combination of beats and superimposed vocals, similar to rapping, in fact hip hop is often mistaken for rap music.  However, hip-hop is a lot more than just rap music, it comes with a rich history and has influenced the youth culture significantly.

Hip Hop music came about in the early 70's and was introduced to the US by DJ Kool Herc in New York, from where it has grown and gone on to influence generations around the world.

Herc moved from Reggae to funk, disco and rock, and took the short percussive breaks and started to extend them with the help of an audio mixer and two records.  His unique brand of music soon became a hit, with musicians and performers (emcees) taking his beats and superimposing their vocals over them.

Hip hop music is used by the musicians and performers to confront issues such as racism and poverty, taking stories of inner city Afro Americans who have lived the dream, working their ways out of the poverty and discrimination culture to become successes.

By the mid seventies, hip hop had been split in to two camps.  One group focused on dancing and the other side focused on rapid style rhymes.  As the 1980′s came round, simple vocals were replaced with far more complex lyrics rapping over the multi layered beats.

The nineties saw the growth in popularity of gangster rap which was written to glorify the gang culture prevalent across either side of the Atlantic.Hip hop by this time had really become a major player in mainstream music, with elements of it popping up in many popular songs.

Following the 1980's, elements of hip hop have been used in a real diversity of music genres.  Whole generations have been influenced by hip hop music and as a result fashion too has been strongly influenced, with a whole range of hip hop clothing having been developed.

If you’re a hip hop fan, and are interested in making your own beats or producing your own hip hop music, take a look at this hip hop software , you’ll be surprised how easy it is to do!

The History Of Rap And Hip Hop Music

Kool G Rap Album

Rapper T.I is again with his sixth album release titled “Paper Trail”. Despite the fact that the Atlanta rapper has had a pretty troubling past yr, he still managed to place collectively and release a sixteen monitor album that has constructed up a nicely deserved anticipation. This article is a overview of T.I’S new album “Paper Path”. I will give a quick overview and score of every song on the album.

Here are the tracks and opinions of “Paper Trail”

56 Bars (Intro) – Good opening observe, considerably up beat song that gets the album off to a very good start. Score 4/5

I’m Illy – Beat is stress-free however onerous hitting. T.I’s stream on this track really makes the beat that rather more better. Ranking three/5

Ready For Whatever – Another stress-free but base driven track. T.I gets private together with his lyrics on this monitor giving it an actual good feel. Score four/5

On High Of The World – T.I shares the spotlight with fellow Atlanta rapper Ludacris in this easy going easy beat track. The two rappers do praise one another well making this track decent. Ranking three/5

Live Your Life – Rihanna joins T.I on this very catchy track. Rihanna singing the hook is what makes this track good. Rating four/5

Whatever You Like – This radio friendly tune does develop in you after listening to it just a few times. Score four/5

No Matter What – Very hard hitting beat and ever tougher lyrics positively makes this observe a stand out one. Score 4/5

My Life Your Leisure – One of many easier going tracks on the album. Easy beat, but nothing special. Ranking 3/5

Porn Star – It is a real laid again monitor the place T.I stream matches the beat. Nothing catchy, a clear album filler. Rating 2/5

Swing Ya Rag – This Swizz Beatz produced banger undoubtedly takes this albim to a different level. This observe brings an unbelievable energy unmatched by another monitor on the album. Score 5/5

What Up, What’s Haapnin – The beat is ok on this one, but what makes this track a winner is it’s catchy hook that makes the song. Rating four/5 Each Chance I Get – Good catcy hook but the total tune is nothing special. Another album filler. Ranking 2/5

Swagga Like Us – This song features Jay-z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. This melodic beat is carried by the artist on this one, not bad. Score 4/5

Slide Show – John Legend joins T.I on this one giving it that real laid back feel. Rating 3/5

You Ain’t Lacking Nothing – That is simply a median track with an average stream from T.I. The track does have a nice message though. Score 2/5

Dead And Gone – This track undoubtedly closes this album with an emotional bang. With Justin Timberlake singing the hook and T.I’s up beat circulate, this observe is an instant winner.

Overall I feel that “Paper Trail” does dwell up to the hype. With only some tracks not really shining, which is understanding as a result of most albums has these much needed fill in tracks, this album is worth a real listen. Ranking four/5

Arabic hip hop is hip hop music and culture originating in the Arabicspeaking world. It is performed in Arabic, and local Arabic dialects, English, French, Berber languages (Tamazight) and Hebrew. Like most artists of the genre, the artists from the Arab World are highly influenced by American hip hop. Also considered part of Arabic hip hop are the rappers of Arab origin in the Arab diaspora including in Europe, North America, Australia. These rappers are at times wellrenowned far beyond their appeal to Arab audiences and are considered successful intrenational rap acts. Hip hop music is highly popular almost everywhere in the Middle East, the Gulf and Northern Africa. It is played on radio stations and shown on TV stations, but live hip hop performances have only begun in the 1990s. Many hip hop groups are still underground, because their views and criticism of politics could lead to government censure. Therefore, the internet has been a major outlet for most groups. Hip hop music is played on the radio stations and shown on TV stations in Arab countries, but performing it has begun only recently. Southern hip hop, also called southern rap, is a form of American Genre music influenced by hip hop that emerged from a late1980s cluboriented vibe in southern U.S. cities, including New Orleans, Shreveport, Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Charleston, Memphis, Virginia Beach, Charlotte, RaleighDurham, Birmingham, Mobile, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Jackson, and Baton Rouge. The music was a reaction to the 1980s flow of hip hop culture from New York City and California, and can be considered a third major American hip hop genre, after East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop. Many early Southern rap artists released their music independently or on mixtapes after encountering difficulty securing recordlabel contracts in the 1990s. Canadian Hip Hop

Canadian Hip Hop

$95.59

The Canadian hip hop scene was first established in the 1980s. Through a variety of factors, it developed much more slowly than Canadas popular rock music scene, and apart from a shortlived burst of mainstream popularity from 1989 to 1991, it remained largely an underground phenomenon until the early 2000s. Canada had hip hop artists right from the early days of the scene the first known Canadian rap single, Singing Fools The Bum Rap, was released in 1982. For the most part the infrastructure simply wasnt there to get most artists music to the recordbuying public. Even Toronto Canadas largest city and one of its most multicultural had difficulty getting an urban music station on the radio airwaves until 2000. As a result, if a Canadian hiphop artist could get signed, it was very difficult for them to get exposure even if their music videos were played on MuchMusic, many artists simply couldnt get their records into stores or played on the radio. Midwest Hip Hop

Midwest Hip Hop

$135.42

Midwest hip hop is hip hop music performed by artists from the Midwestern United States. In contrast with its East Coast, West Coast and Southern counterparts, Midwest hip hop has very few constants. Its first dose of national popularity in the mid90s was associated with fastpaced styles of rappers such as; Twista (Chicago), Tech N9ne (Kansas City, Missouri), and Bone ThugsnHarmony (Cleveland). These artists became the first to introduce Midwest hip hop that rivaled the popularity of West and East Coast styles. However, subsequent acts which have since risen to national prominence such as Nelly, D12, and Kanye West share very few similarities. It is because these lack of constants between acts from different cities (and sometimes even between artists from the same city) that it can be extremely difficult to define a typical Midwest sound. One characteristic of Midwest hip hop is that beat tempos can range from 90 to about 180, while East Coasts beat tempo is 90120, West Coast is 100120, and Southern rap is 80110. Prozak, as stated in his DVD The Hitchcock of HipHop, says that the Midwests style often revolves around Dark beats and lyrics. Hal Leonard Hip-Hop and Rap Lyric Library Book

Hal Leonard Hip-Hop and Rap Lyric Library Book

$18.95

Rap music’s place within the global pantheon of pop culture was forever solidified when Webster’s decided to add the slang term def to the dictionary. Once considered an outsider art form, the music that originated from the streets of New York City has now become the new rock’n'roll, a major force dictating the trends of the day. Everything from fashion and advertising to literature and film has been touched by rap’s infectious rhyme patterns and rhythmic interplay, making it one of the foremost musical genres of the era. At the core of this cultural fascination with rap music are the lyrics, which run the gamut from clever rhyme patterns and lighthearted party fare to gangsta vérité, providing a glimpse into inner city life for those far removed from it. The end result of this raw street slang bathed in thumping beats has been the creation and ongoing evolution of an art form that speaks to all walks of life. The full spectrum of this vibrant genre is represented in this book, Hip-Hop & Rap Lyric Library by nearly 100 artists, including: Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre, Missy Elliot, Eminem, 50 Cent, Ice Cube, Ja Rule, Wyclef Jean, LL Cool J, Lil’ Kim, Ludacris, Method Man, Nas, Nelly, Notorious B.I.G., Outkast, Public Enemy, P Diddy, Run-DMC, 2Pac, Wu-Tang Clan, and many others.

“Have you ever wondered if incorporating hip hop into a youth ministry is wise? It does seem to be a last resort if your goal is to attract young people. However, A Divine Revelation of Hip Hop gives caution to those who have invited this form of music in because of its popularity, and call it worship. A Divine Revelation of Hip Hop explodes with insight into the stronghold of this music. The root of this genre extends further than Brooklyn and the South Bronx, New York. You will read bold revelations that show how Hip Hop became infused with profane and perverse lyrics traveling on beats that war for your soul. Together they seek to destroy a generation and infiltrate and entire world. From the perspective of pop culture, everyone agrees it has gone too far. So that leads me to this question, can Hip Hop be Holy? Only a few will dare to dig deep. Since childhood, Kelly has served in various ministry capacities including teaching, missions, choir, and leadership. On all levels, she has provided administrative expertise to help build businesses and ministries in Milwaukee, Chicago, and the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Many opportunities were seized to witness to everyone including dignitaries, business leaders, celebrities, and professional athletes. With a natural love for reading, a gift for writing books, newsletters, screenplays, music and journals soon developed. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kelly currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia with her Husband and their three children. Also having an entrepreneurial spirit, the Lord allowed Kelly to become a business owner and founder of a non-profit organization & Evangelist Media Inc. Anthology

Anthology

$23.98

For those who haven’t discovered that A Tribe Called Quest made several of the best LPs in hip-hop history, Anthology is a perfect way to encapsulate the trio’s decade-long career into one manageable portion. All of their best and biggest songs are here, from the early neglected joint “Luck of Lucien” to classic jazz-rap from The Low End Theory like “Jazz (We’ve Got),” and their 45-rpm peak with “Award Tour,” all the way to their last big hit, “Find a Way,” from 1998′s The Love Movement. Yes, anyone who enjoys hip-hop needs to own at least Midnight Marauders and The Low End Theory, but Anthology succeeds in delivering all the highest points from a great hip-hop group’s career. The collection also includes the first solo track from Q-Tip, 1999′s “Vivrant Thing.” ~ John Bush, Rovi

 The Fix

The Fix

$11.99

Brad Jordan, head of A&R for Def Jam South, was a big success after just a few months on the job; his signing of Ludacris in 2000 paid off in triple-platinum after less than a year. It’s not every A&R man who’s rewarded for great work with an album of his own, but then again, not every A&R man is also one of the most influential voices in the history of hip-hop. After defining the down South gangsta during the late ’80s with Geto Boys, Scarface began a solo career that earned him a couple of gold albums and saw some of the biggest names in rap (2Pac, Ice Cube, Kurupt, Too Short) angling to work with him — this back when posse tracks were rarities. Scarface fans will recognize quite a few of the usual themes throughout The Fix, like the good-times-and-bad territory anthem “My Block” (complete with an old-school production, ’70s style) and “In Cold Blood,” a first-person journal entry from a gang-banger. The highlights, though, find Scarface morphing back into Jordan the bottom-line businessman, banking on the familiar names: “Guess Who’s Back” is more a Jay-Z track with a little room for Scarface than the other way around, and the same goes for the Nas feature, “In Between Us.” And Pharrell from Neptunes takes over “Someday,” with Faith Evans adding a little sugar to the chorus to make up for the patented Scarface growl on the verses. Though The Fix has him reaching for the charts as well as focusing on the personal, the inimitable Scarface balances the competing concerns well. ~ John Bush, Rovi

 The Low End Theory

The Low End Theory

$23.98

While most of the players in the jazz-rap movement never quite escaped the pasted-on qualities of their vintage samples, with The Low End Theory, A Tribe Called Quest created one of the closest and most brilliant fusions of jazz atmosphere and hip-hop attitude ever recorded. The rapping by Q-Tip and Phife Dawg could be the smoothest of any rap record ever heard; the pair are so in tune with each other, they sound like flip sides of the same personality, fluidly trading off on rhymes, with the former earning his nickname (the Abstract) and Phife concerning himself with the more concrete issues of being young, gifted, and black. The trio also takes on the rap game with a pair of hard-hitting tracks: “Rap Promoter” and “Show Business,” the latter a lyrical soundclash with Q-Tip and Phife plus Brand Nubian’s Diamond D, Lord Jamar, and Sadat X. The woman problem gets investigated as well, on two realistic yet sensitive tracks, “Butter” and “The Infamous Date Rape.” The productions behind these tracks aren’t quite skeletal, but they’re certainly not complex. Instead, Tribe weaves little more than a stand-up bass (sampled or, on one track, jazz luminary Ron Carter) and crisp, live-sounding drum programs with a few deftly placed samples or electric keyboards. It’s a tribute to their unerring production sense that, with just those few tools, Tribe produced one of the best hip-hop albums in history, a record that sounds better with each listen. The Low End Theory is an unqualified success, the perfect marriage of intelligent, flowing raps to nuanced, groove-centered productions. ~ John Bush, Rovi

An ambitious, admirable, and necessary undertaking, Tommy Boy rolled out a dozen-volume series focusing on rap’s early years, treating “Rapper’s Delight” as ground zero and cutting off at 1991. If the first four volumes — released before the following eight — are an accurate representation, the series will slant heavily toward the late ’80s, when the rap industry really gathered steam, and regularly mix politically charged tracks with party jams and classics with novelties (the difference between the distinctions, of course, wasn’t always clear). Some listeners will be displeased with the decision to go with edited versions when necessary. Then again, we’re not talking about a period of rap history when tracks required rhyme-to-rhyme profanity to be taken seriously (ask Skee-Lo or Paperboy), so it’s really not that much a factor. Apart from automatic picks, like the 14-minute version of Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” Boogie Down Productions’ “South Bronx,” and Doug E. Fresh’s “La Di Da Di,” the first volume of the series includes several cuts that are just as integral: Marley Marl’s star-studded “The Symphony,” Fearless Four’s ecstatic “Rockin’ It,” and J.J. Fad’s Dr. Dre-produced “Supersonic.” The liners contain a brief essay from multimedia hip-hop don Nelson George (which appears in each volume), as well as a personal intro and track-by-track commentary from Jeff Chang (who, with the spectacular Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, wrote the book on hip-hop). ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Ten years after the release of their first album, Cypress Hill have maintained a distinctive personality that has stuck around through several different musical directions. Never a band that has been afraid to experiment, the rock-rap sound they attempted on Skull & Bones is again one of the driving forces of the album. Where on that release they attempted to separate the tracks into the rap and rock sides, they just keep it all in the same mix here. Another huge difference between the two records is the quality of their rock-raps compared to their regular hip-hop sound. The biggest problem with Skull & Bones was that the rock songs were missing strong hooks, keeping them from being a successful blend of the two genres. But on Stoned Raiders, the rock songs are some of the strongest tracks. The best song on the entire album might be “Bitter,” a brooding slow-burner that shows B Real laying down disjointed rhymes over shuffling jazz drums and strummed surf guitar. Other notable rock tracks include “Amplified,” a Rage Against the Machine knockoff that features some subpar rhyming from Sen Dog but a catchy chorus, and the opener “Trouble,” which utilizes Roni Size-esque percussion with trippy guitar courtesy of Fear Factory’s Christian Olde Wolbers. The percussion is actually one of the standouts of the record; DJ Muggs and live drummer Bobo do a meticulous job of finding unique beats for the record. Unfortunately, many of the hip-hop tracks do not come near to the rock songs. There are a few exceptions, especially toward the beginning of the album. “Southland Killers” is a great duet between B Real and MC Ren; in fact, Ren contributes his best rhymes since N.W.A’s Niggaz4life. And “Kronologik” is a spellbinding retelling of Cypress Hill’s history that adds some clever insight into some of the notable events in their career. But many of the other rap songs simply do not have the beats or the choruses to keep them interesting, a problem that would seem unth…
