Practice makes perfect, right? Not if you’re practicing incorrectly. In fact, a lot of drummers feel like practicing is a waste of time. They just want to play, play, play.
But if you practice correctly, it will pay off in huge ways. You’ll start to see results quickly, and you’ll gain confidence. But how do you practice correctly?
Here are three tips to help. They seem almost too obvious to mention, but you’d be surprised how often they are ignored.
- Slow Down
If you’re trying hard to get better at something, you usually want to be better at it NOW. You want to be able to do that fill or play that groove yesterday.
So when you practice, you keep doing it over and over, and you almost have it, but you keep screwing it up. You’re so close. You’re getting frustrated. Why can’t you get it already?
Chances are, you’re practicing too fast. That means you’re practicing the mistake! You’re teaching yourself how to do it wrong, over and over and over.
Instead, slow way down. Go slow enough so you can play it smoothly. Even if that means you feel like you’re in s-u-u-p-e-r s-s-l-o-o-o-w speed. Even if you feel ridiculous.
Once you can play it smoothly at that slow speed, play it a tiny bit faster. If you can play it smoothly a few times, play it a little faster. Keep doing that until you make a mistake.
When you make a mistake, take it one notch slower, and make sure you play it correctly. Don’t speed up until you can do it perfectly a few times.
If you do this, you teach your body and your brain to go through the correct motions. You are practicing the correct thing, instead of practicing the mistake.
- Use a metronome
A metronome is a device that accurately beeps or clicks a specific number of times per minute. You set the tempo (speed), and it click, click, clicks.
You listen and play along, trying to match the metronome’s tempo. If you can’t go that fast, slow the metronome down. If you can keep up, speed the metronome up.
The job of a drummer is to keep a steady beat. But unless you’re born a robot, how do you do that?
Simple–use the metronome to train your body and mind to become like a machine. After months of regular practice, you’ll become more precise. You’ll get better at knowing if you are speeding up or slowing down. You’ll keep a steady beat without having to rely on the metronome or other musicians. You’ll be doing your job as a drummer.
- Make it fun
Playing rudiments and moving in slow motion to develop good technique can be boring. A lot of drummers skip this step. They jump straight to playing grooves and fills and sounding cool. But their playing will ultimately suffer.
The way to fix this is to make those rudiments fun. Hate playing paradiddles? Put on a song you like and play paradiddles for the whole thing.
Or turn your metronome on and try playing quarter notes, then eighth notes, then sixteenth notes, then triplets to it. Increase the speed and keep going.
You’ll soon hit a tempo where this is a challenge. Make note of that, then make it a goal to better your tempo every practice session, every day, or every week. Even if that means you only go up one beat per minute. That’s still an improvement.
So there you have it–3 simple-sounding tips. But don’t underestimate their power. Incorporate these into your practice sessions, and you will start seeing results within a few weeks. Now go out there and make some rhythm!
