From Seattle Center to Westlake Center to the Pike Place Market the usual visitor attractions be just a little more special in a chilly winter day. Throngs of excited, bundled-up of families and couples sample the seasonal offerings in Westlake as finding carousel rides, or the kettle corn and elephant ears closely. Vendors make balloon animals for the kids while powerful Christmas music blares in the background make sure no one misses out of Seattle's holiday spirit.
Make it an overnight trip and it is even better. First, you're sure to see the different Christmas lights along the streets of the city including the famous star at Macy's, the Space Needle lights and many other special seasonal touches. Our base of operations is a Seattle landmark, the Edgewater Hotel. Maybe you remember that Edgewater is popular during the sixties when the Beatles stayed there and fished right out of their windows. Now Edgewater is a classic elegance that combines the best location in Seattle with updated interior design evokes the Northwest's rich Native American heritage. The first thing we saw when entering our room waterfront is a Washington State Ferry – only the window and across the waters of Elliott Bay. Our view made us feel We are traveling on a cruise ship with nothing but water between us and the ferry. This, of course, is the main attraction of the aptly-named Edgewater – a location literally out on the water with fabulous views of Puget Sound and nearby islands.
Our room featured many point Northwest like a log upon the bed in our comfortable king-size bed, a wood bark and trim panel above the fireplace corner, Native American designs on the carpets to hard pine baseboards, and Indian characters and design in the center of the wood-frame entertainment. Bathroom, a large claw-style bathtub looked terribly inviting, while the colors and modern fixtures made the room look like something you'd like to see in a magazine on interior design. The floor was amber quartz slate, while the room also includes a glass-enclosed European spring mineral bath.
A room in Edgewater – features a constant parade of boats just outside your window – there is the temptation to just stay there and enjoy endless sights and sounds. But our main goal is to look at the trip work the city's Christmas, so we walked over Pike Place Market, only a few blocks from the hotel.
The market is one of Seattle's most recognizable symbol – right up there with Space Needle. The market goes all out with its decorations and, indeed, have Christmas trees available – we wanted one cart back to Edgewater. Take a walk just north of the first fish market and you enter a hive of activity where it is seems like just about anything you want is for sale – fresh fruits and produce, honey, herbs, dried flower bouquets, jams and jellies, nuts, fruit, chocolate, tee-shirts, purses, you name it. With very few fish markets in the same building, as well as restaurants where you can eat fresh fish before you even leave the market ..
Just across the street from the market, in front of Starbucks, a musical group called Slimpickens is warming up the crowds with lively 1930's style music played on a four-piece configuration: guitar, stand-up bass, violin and washboard. Dressed in 30's clothing, the group also seemed to be getting a Depression-era response to their music, lots of smiles and toe-tapping, but not many coins put down their cups visible.
This includes about we encountered Piroshky, Piroshky, a tiny take-out restaurant serving up fresh Russian piroshkies for just under $ 5. These are just baked and, if you're wondering, piroshky is a little like a flakey turnover filled with meat, cheese or other fillings. Some friends of ours instead went to Von's Grand City cafe, just a few blocks from the market on Pine Street where food was fine but they are reported back that it was the first time they encountered canned champagne. They have ordered a split of champagne and can be that is delivered to their desks is a straw attached – which our friend said reminded them of the boxes compote they get for their kids. Of course that's what visiting the "Big City" is all about – experiencing new things.
A few blocks from the market is Westlake Center a modern, multi-story shopping center with upscale shops and – because of its location near Macy's and Nordstrom – the epicenter of retail activity town. It is here that, for just $ 2 each way, you can hop on board a railroad – originally built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair – and zip over to Seattle Center where their Winterfest celebration will continue holiday entertainment and one of the coolest model railroads and miniature Christmas town your kids will ever see.
Soon it was time to head back to Edgewater, where we watched the fog roll in and marveled at how some sailboats that were out today is wintery able to dodge the Washington State Ferries. Thank goodness for foghorns and radar, we guess. Just a few minutes walk from Edgewater is the Spaghetti Factory, if where we enjoyed a tasty but cheap dinner.
The night was quiet and, when Li came up the next day, the sky is blue and the view from our The rooms are like a picture postcard. No need to lose that view while having breakfast – on the ground floor at Edgewater we stopped in for a hearty meal with best views in town to the hotel's award-winning Six Seven restaurant. We pleasantly surprised at the reasonable prices, given the prime location of the restaurant and upscale reputation.
Further exploration of the city to tap for our second day, with no shortage of goods available in unusually good price. Soon It is time to go home, but it is not like a trip home from the mall where you are exhausted and swear not to go shopping again multitudes. Yes, we would fulfill our Christmas shopping all right – but we also felt invigorated by an unforgettable holiday trip to Seattle's Winter Wonderland.
