Although their parts are fully written out, the timing of the players’ entrances is triggered by a computer program modeled on patterns of neuronal spiking in the human brain, so that no two performances are the same. Matthias is the violin soloist and Ryan controls the live interactive programming. The results — shifting atmospheric sound masses — are texturally fascinating, particularly in the third and fourth movements. The movements seem too brief, though; this slowly evolving material needs a longer span, a broader canvass on which to unfold, and would be even more persuasive if given more space. As is the case with most of Nonclassical’s releases, the album includes remixes of material from the main piece, provided here on 11 tracks by 12 musicians, some with primarily classical backgrounds and some from more experimental rock traditions, although, as with most of Nonclassical’s artists, that distinction is pretty blurry. The remixes offer a gratifying range of responses to original material, from the static minimalism of “Neuron Trigger” by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to the giddily erratic groove of Gabriel Prokofiev’s “Brain Bumper.” In some, like Marcus Lancaster’s “2nd Movement” remix, the material is so thoroughly processed that it’s hard to recognize the source. Dominic Murcott’s background as a percussionist comes across in “The Bipolar Shuffle,” one of the most inventive and sophisticated tracks. Another standout is Marcus Coates’ lovely and spooky “0.2 – 20.000%,” which uses layers of the solo violin line essentially unaltered, underlaid with a mysterious new accompaniment that develops into an ominous cloud that eventually engulfs it. This is another impressive track that could be made even more powerful if the material were given more time to expand and breathe. Cortical Songs and the remixes should be of strong interest to listeners intrigued by the intersection between new music and experimental rock. ~ Stephen Eddins

Forgiven, Not Forgotten $13.96 The appropriately named Corrs are an Irish pop group consisting of Andrea Corr on lead vocals and tin whistle; Caroline Corr on drums, bodhran, and vocals; Jim Corr on keyboards, guitar, and vocals; and Sharon Corr on violin and vocals. The traditional Irish instruments like the bodhran and tin whistle add a twist to the pop melodies of tracks like the title track and “The Right Time,” where they are allowed some solo time. The Irish musical background of the band members is most obviously heard in Sharon Corr’s violin work, used here more like a traditional Irish fiddle than a true classical violin. There are glimpses of the Corrs’ skill as instrumentalists on tracks like “Erin Shore,” the introduction on the album. There are a few of these instrumentals placed throughout the album, but unfortunately, none are much longer than two minutes. The focus is on the adult contemporary mid-tempo songs. Music for Falling from Trees $11.99 This short album (a little under 30 minutes) documents a suite composed for Falling from Trees, a choreography by Adrienne Hart. Broderick recorded the music in early January 2009, three weeks before the premiere. He deliberately chose simple means of recording, camping out in a barn with upright piano, violin, viola, and computer. The music is typical Broderick: post-classical compositions with a post-rock feel, quiet and languid, with a touch of sorrow and the occasional ray of sunshine. He has used multi-tracking with the piano and strings to play depth-perception tricks, and it works marvelously well, especially in “Pill Induced Slumber,” where the accrued piano rumbles amount to a gnarling drone that drowns out the violin’s frantic sixteenth notes. Less accessible than his song-based albums (like 4 Track Songs, released almost simultaneously), Music for Falling from Trees is concise, focused, and well executed. Music of Bill Evans $12.99 For their second and final jazz project, the adventurous Kronos Quartet (a top classical string quartet) performed eight Bill Evans compositions, plus “Nardis” (which Evans always claimed Miles Davis stole from him). Three songs apiece add either guitarist Jim Hall or bassist Eddie Gomez. The members of Kronos (David Harrington and John Sherba on violin, Hank Dutt on viola, and cellist Joan Jeanrenaud) do not improvise, but they expertly play Tom Darter’s arrangements, some of which (particularly “Peace Piece”) are transcriptions of pianist Evans’ solos. The Goat Rodeo Sessions $14.99 The last time cellist Yo-Yo Ma teamed with bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin player Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers fame) for a classical/bluegrass hybrid, the result was the gold-selling Songs of Joy & Peace. Here, Ma, Meyer, and Thile are joined by fiddler Stuart Duncan in a different kind of string quartet. The slang phrase “goat rodeo,” according the Urban Dictionary, “is about the most polite term used by aviation people (and others in higher risk situations) to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it.” That may be overstating the case for a group of musicians, most of whom have worked together and succeeded before, but it also carries a rural connotation that is appropriate for music that is, for the most part, closer to bluegrass than classical. The tunes were written by Duncan, Meyer, and Thile, and Ma’s role is largely supportive. After the fast pieces Attaboy and Quarter Chicken Dark, Helping Hand is the first slower number, with Thile switching to guitar and Duncan taking over the mandolin for a musical conversation between the two instruments. Where’s My Bow? is a violin/cello/bass trio with Thile sitting out, and it is one of the few tracks that leans more toward the classical side, boasting a big, dramatic finish. The more exotic Here and Heaven finds both Thile and Meyer at times playing the Renaissance instrument the gamba, as Duncan picks up a fretless banjo, all of them backing a vocal duet between Thile and Aoife O’Donovan of Crooked Still. Meyer moves to piano for the slow, thoughtful Franz and the Eagle, another piece that has more of a classical bent. The rest of the album is in a progressive bluegrass mode, Less Is Moi mixing several short themes and allowing room for improvisation, and 13:8 taken quickly, with Duncan and Thile interacting briskly. USED: Classical Album, Vol. 2: China Girl $7.99 The talent of the young violin virtuoso Vanessa-Mae is known the world over. She made her first CD at the age of 12 and took the world by storm. This CD is the second of her Classical Albums. She presents first quite surely the most-known Chinese violin concerto, the “Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto” by Chinese composers Ho Zhan Hao and Chen Kang, which is based on an old Chinese legend about two lovers and written somehow like a Chinese opera. The second piece is a fantasy written by Vanessa-Mae on Puccini’s opera “Turandot” which follows the dramatic story of the opera. And the third piece is called “Happy Valley – The 1997 Re-unification Overture” for violin, orchestra, and chorus which Vanessa-Mae wrote, in collaboration with Andy Hill, for the 1997 re-unification of Hong Kong with China. This last piece has somewhat a pop character, yet the mixture of pop character, old Chinese songs, and virtuosistic violin playing is quite interesting. USED: Lamento Borincano (Puerto Rican Lament): Early Puerto Rican Music 1916-1939 $11.99 Lamento Borincano features 50 songs, performed by 20 groups, on two CDs of Puerto Rican music recorded prior to World War II. In fact, most of the songs were recorded in New York, and all but one were done from 1927 onward, which doesn’t affect the quality of the music. Sung entirely in Spanish, it’s a valuable document of a sound that is as interesting as the music being made and recorded by Mexican and Cuban outfits of the same era, though it’s not as well known as sounds produced in those regions. The Puerto Rican music contained in this anthology has some general similarities to music of Mexico, Cuba, and some other Caribbean and Central American regions: acoustic guitars are the prominent instruments, lilting Latin rhythms are frequent, and sad, piquant melodies and harmony vocals strong elements. Yet Puerto Rican groups, at least those presented here, had a more low-key, perhaps even sadder air, which actually makes them more appealing. The influence of jazz and classical music can be felt both in some of the more orchestral arrangements, and in some of the instruments that augment the guitars, including trumpet, accordion, mandolin, and violin. Although lyrics (in both Spanish and English) are included for only some of the selections in the booklet, based on the translations that are included, the songs often delved into quite serious and topical subjects. Among them are Puerto Rican Nationalist politics, political upheaval, migration to New York City, and living on welfare.
