The beauty of the Don McLean song called "Vincent", often known as "starry Starry Night" is one of the most popular songs of the early 1970s. It's lyrics are deep and meaningful and blended together in an almost fearful and more reflective of the music score, tell a story about a man who lived in a time and culture that does not accept or understand her.

Vincent van Gogh is now recognized as one of history's greatest artists. However, his Fame was never achieved during his own life. In fact, Vincent is a much misunderstood and troubled man. He was afflicted by schizophrenia and depression, and although he came from a wealthy family, they do not accept or love him for this condition. Eventually, it got the better of him and he took his own life.

Don McLean's song reveals that he was deeply impressed with the people. Merciful to the struggle of the poor, through its message work, he "tried to set them free." But alas, "they do not listen, they do not know how." Van Gogh is known for its work until after his death.

Finally, there is a reference to Van Gogh's ultimate suicide. The pain of depression and rejection was unsuccessful to love him for his art. Being not quite as crazy but still suffering repeated painful illness, he "suffered for his sanity." Van Gogh and his art are like lovers in a relationship, but "they do not love you" and eventually "took your life as lovers often do."

Don McLean was clearly impressed by the man himself and therefore, wrote his songs as a retrospective, after reading a book about the life of the painter. He felt he understood the man and wrote: "And now I understand … and now I think I know …" He was clearly touched by of the soul of the artist and his words, written in first person, summarize his feelings: "I could have told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful to you.
