Heather Graham’s Fictional Home In Time For Christmas – Trip Hearth, Happiness, And Heartstrings

Christmas 2010 Prolific mystery/thriller author Heather Graham, provides you a fresh, seasonal diversion in Household In Time For Christmas (Mira, 2009).
At 10:00 am, December 22, 1776, Jake Mallory, an American Revolution soldier convicted of treason; stood on the gallows in New York City, to be hanged. Jake accepted his fate, as British Major Hempsted condemned him. Jake’s wonderful, young, adoptive sister, Serena; stormed the platform to chastise the Significant for his actions. Jake was awestruck. Serena ought to happen to be in their hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Now, he feared for her existence. Throughout the commotion, Major Hempsted ordered the trap door be released. Jake felt the noose tighten, as he fell into a black hole. He very last remembers a beautiful, snow-white evening, and blood red rose petals falling from the sky…

Graham whisks you to contemporary Christmas week in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Melody Tarleton is driving property from trip shopping, reflecting for the season; when she hits black ice. She loses control from the car and strikes a man, throwing him into the snowy landscape. That person is Jake Mallory; nonetheless dressed in his eighteenth century military garb. Melody effusively apologizes; specified that she’s caused injury. Jake assures her that he’s ok. As Jake recounts his last moments on the gallows, Melody believes he is either suffered brain trauma, or is crazy. Compassion leads Melody to invite Jake house. She suggests the collaborative story that he attends Boston College and is really a tour guide, to make clear his physical appearance. Jake agrees.

Melody and Jake arrive residence. Christmas Eve astonishment, it was his similar residence centuries ago. Jake meets Melody’s moms and dads. Her mother is Mona, who Graham describes as ” a strange combination of old-fashioned lady of the house with a bit of the wild kid thrown in.” She also believes her ancestors had been pagan healers or Wiccans. Melody’s father, George, is really a former professor at Worcester Poly-Tech; and is also fascinated with frequencies and waves. He’s usually tweaking outdated inventions, and mastering new types. Melody’s brother, Keith, confides skepticism in her story concerning her good friend; and she reveals Jake’s “tale.” He’s additional open to believe than Melody. Mona is intrigued by Jake’s surname. She retrieves an older diary the Tarletons inherited when they purchased the house. Its creator, Serena Mallory; particulars her brother’s hanging in 1776; except, the story has no ending. Jake trembles as he reads the entry.

Melody and Keith take Jake clubbing in Boston right to modernize him. Jake recognizes Colonial era buildings, and appreciates Faneuil Hall’s endurance. Whilst socializing, Jake is invited to showcase his fiddle-playing talents. He is requested to play on the upcoming Wiccan Christmas Ball, which he accepts. Quickly, Jake captivates Melody with his gentlemanly demeanor, handsome characteristics, and dapper appearance. She as well enthralls him. Ultimately Jake seeks to return to Serena who was loyal to him that fateful day in 1776. Keith reminds his sister, “Melody, I told you before- you can not retain him you know. He really isn’t a stray.”

Jake’s authentic, hand-sewn war uniform, and Serena’s diary entries lead Mona and George to reevaluate Jake. He confirms their beliefs; whilst Melody now thinks they are all lunatics. “Honestly daughter, where’s the magic in you?” Mona asks Melody. Mona’s Wiccan interests and Jake’s band performance prioritize attending the Wiccan Christmas Ball. The Tarletons, adorned in black attire; arrive in the event occurring at a Gloucester castle. Jake plays violin using the band. Partygoers consume mead, and connect with mediums present, reading tealeaves and crystal balls. Mona’s Wiccan buddies are enamored with Jake. They are aware of the neighborhood American Revolution War hero stories connected with his identify. Enter, Mark Hathaway, Melody’s boyfriend who arrives in town 1 working day early. Melody, entwined in the week’s events, under no circumstances described his name to Jake, presaging an awkward meeting. Melody confesses her feelings of friendship, not appreciate, for Mark. He is too old-fashioned, believing that ladies need to be barefoot, pregnant, and from the kitchen. She informs Jake that she’ll by no means marry Mark. Though there, partygoers can not enable but note the physical resemblance among Jake and Mark.

Melody awakens sunrise, Christmas Song to an empty house. Alarmed, she finds her mother and father, Keith, and Jake out inside the backyard. Jake is standing front and center from the old well. George eagerly controls two wave machines emitting magnetic fields, on every side from the structure. Mona has prepared a magical potion she re-created from Serena’s diary. Melody demands an explanation for your ludicrous scene. Jake sadly states he have to return to Serena to validate her loyalty. Mark appears, prepared to drink the potion to send him back towards simpler era. He and Jake scuffle above the cup. Magical journeys back to 1776 ensue for Mark, Melody, and Jake, where they meet Serena. Sunrise Christmas Eve to sunset Christmas Day time will be the exclusive period to resolve their holiday break happenings.

Arcadi Volodos was born in Leningrad, Russia, on February 24th, 1972. He was born to parents who are both talented singers and he followed their footsteps by learning to voice an early age. He attended Capilla M. Glinka School and the St. Petersburg conservatory where he also studied conducting.

At the age of eight years old, He began playing piano but it is not his top musical passion, at that point. He began to make his piano playing more seriously in 1987, at age 15 years old. He began his formal piano studies in Moscow Conservatory, then continued his studies at conservatoire de Paris and the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia.

Arcadi Volodos is a natural gift for playing the piano and began to show his superb talent pretty quickly. Many pianists study for a much longer period of time he still did not advance to the level he reached fairly easily. He began to be recognized as a rare and wonderful talent. He refused to enter contests, however, as he is philosophically opposed to the musical competition.

A serendipitous private performance for a label Sony Classical was organized by a friend of his. performance that propelled him into the spotlight where he was then offered a lengthy exclusive contracts by Sony executives.

His musical ability is said to contain passion, color, imagination and superb technique. Some have said that his talent is the "once in a lifetime" caliber. His technical skills are being touted as flawless.

He has produced multiple award-winning CD's and recordings have received rave reviews. He is compared to the legendary Russian musicians, Vladimir Horowitz. Horowitz has called one of the most talented pianists of all 20th century. It is reported that Horowitz is usually paid bread, butter and chocolate instead of money for his performances during the times of the Russian economy suffering.

Volodos has worked with some of the most famous orchestras and conductors in the world, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, the Boston Collection and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. Her Carnegie Hall debut narrative was recorded and released as a Sony CD in 1997 and it received a multitude of awards around the world.

In a 2003, a classical music manager in an American newspaper interview Volodos. He described as short, stocky with thick, curly black hair. He reportedly is interested in electronic gadgets as a hobby but that the piano was her great love. His alleged secret to his spectacular performance was that he feels that listening is more important than playing. He develops a sound image in his mind and tries to include it in his music. Apparently he is doing a great job.

For the finest and most trusted piano store, Louisiana pianists’ best option is Hall Piano which is a premier establishment for piano sales and services for over 50 years. To know more, visit http://www.hallpiano.com

One of the great developments of the 20th century is our ability to preserve music in performance as well as transcription. The performing artists will be remembered by more than name–their recordings will play on for centuries to come. This recording represents a rare opportunity to hear one of the century’s great violinists in his youth, conducted by a great composer at the end of his career. Two years before his death, Sir Edward Elgar met a 16-year-old Yehudi Menuhin, and the two became fast friends. Menuhin, who was already enthusiastic about Elgar’s violin concertos and ‘Enigma’ Variations, was enlisted to record with the London Symphony and Royal Albert Hall orchestras. The synergy between conductor and soloist is palpable in these remastered recordings. In addition to their superb technique and understanding of the works, the two understood each other deeply. “You see, Yehudi,” Elgar wrote over the violin’s entry on the score, “I thought of you 10 years before you were born.”Performances such as these make for legend in music history texts. Thanks to technology, they can be preserved and enjoyed today and forever.

Auteur theorists who’ve charted the career of “cult” director Edgar G. Ulmer have seldom mentioned Carnegie Hall, simply because it was more expensive than most of Ulmer’s films and thus can’t be regarded a “low-budget masterpiece.” The wafer-thin plotline concerns a young immigrant woman (Marsha Hunt) who takes a job as a Carnegie Hall cleaning woman. Her love of music leads her to a better job in the Hall, and after several years she rises to the position of concert organizer. The woman uses her clout to promote her own son’s career as a pianist. Carnegie Hall showcases a number of celebrated musicians. Selections include: Arthur Rubinstein performing Chopin’s Polonaise in A Flat, Jascha Heifetz performing Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in G Major by Tchaikovsky, Ezio Pinza singing both the drinking song from Don Giovanni and one of the arias from Simon di Boccanegra, Lily Pons singing The Bell Song from Lakme by Delibes, and Jan Peerce singing O Sole Mio.The film also includes musical performances by Bruno Walter,Rise Stevens, Gregor Piatagorsky, Harry James, Vaughn Monroe, Leopold Stokowski, and others. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

 Cinema Serenade

Cinema Serenade

$14.99

Cinema Serenade came to be as a result of the 1992 collaboration of the world’s premier film composer, John Williams, with one of the world’s finest violinists, Itzhak Perlman, on the score for Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust epic Schindler’s List. The duo reunited to create a collection of excerpts from a variety of different film scores presented in new arrangements that are centered around Perlman’s violin. Williams arranged most of the numbers and conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The selections are a strange hodgepodge culled haphazardly from some 50 years of film history. As you might expect, the theme from Schindler’s List is included. And it’s not surprising to find Oscar honored scores like Out of Africa (John Barry) or Il Postino (Luis Bacalov), The Age of Innocence (Elmer Bernstein) and The Color Purple (Quincy Jones, Jeremy Lubbock, Rodney Templeton, Jeff Rosenbaum). But some of the other selections are less predictable. There are songs from musical comedies (“Papa Can You Hear From Me?” from Yentl, “I Will Wait for You” from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). There is a Carlos Gardel tango that was used briefly in Scent of a Woman, but was not composed for a film. Most rewardingly, there are some memorable musical selections from the oft-neglected realm of foreign film. In addition to Bacalov’s theme from Il Postino, a beautifully sentimental melody with tango-like flourishes, there are excerpts from Luis Bonfa’s Black Orpheus, Andrea Morricone’s Cinema Paradiso, and Andre Previn’s Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Perlman’s gorgeous solos add breadth and scope to nearly all of the compositions, demonstrating that they work as well in the concert hall as they did in the movie theater. The only real lightweight pieces included were both composed by Williams himself. Far and Away and Sabrina are hardly the brightest points in Williams’ career; the scores were nearly as forgettable as the films themselves. (The latter did receive an Oscar nominatio…

John Adams: The Dharma at Big Sur

John Adams: The Dharma at Big Sur

$19.99

The two works on this album reflect the West Coast and Northeastern sides of John Adams’ musical personality. He has fused the two tendencies with uncommon elegance over the years, but here he allows himself the latitude to pay more direct homage to several predecessors who influenced him. The Dharma at Big Sur is a concerto for electric six-string violin and orchestra in two movements. Its most immediately striking aspect is the violin itself, played here by the performer who originated the work, Tracy Silverman. It encompasses the range of a violin plus a cello, and it’s capable of extended dynamic range and of tones that range from the traditional melancholy to rock aggression. The work was composed for the opening of the new Disney Hall in Los Angeles, the acoustically strong new downtown home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Adams wrote into it subtle orchestral effects as well, deep layers of sound that emerge only intermittently. Adams dutifully described his piece as an evocation of the mystical, somewhat melancholy awe that the Easterner feels on experiencing Big Sur for the first time, but really there is not much in the music that evokes the oceanside. Instead, Adams draws on the music of California composer Lou Harrison, a major inspiration to all the composers with roots in the minimalist movement and a pioneer in transferring the principles of Asian musical traditions to the Western orchestra. His first movement, “A New Day,” is akin to a juiced-up Indian instrumental improvisation, with the orchestra very subtly deployed in order to produce drones, sympathetic vibrations, and a final buildup of intensity. The energetic, jazzy second movement, “Sri Moonshine,” is the one with the Indian name, but its consistent textures suggest the work of an American composer, Californian Terry Riley. The homages paid in the album’s other work, My Father Knew Charles Ives, are more explicit. Adams himself refers to the three movements as “three more ‘place…

John Blair concert at Philharmonic Hall on 05 Jul 73

John Blair concert at Philharmonic Hall on 05 Jul 73

$7.98

On his ’70s albums like 1971′s Mystical Soul, 1976′s Southern Love, and 1977′s We Belong Together, violinist-vocalist John Blair blended Coltrane-inspired searching and spirituality with funk to come up with a heady/infectious brew that connected with the burgeoning fusion crowd. Newport Jazz Festival impresario George Wein picked up on that connection by featuring Blair on the bill along with Chuck Mangione’s quartet and John Mayall’s Jazz Blues Fusion at the Philharmonic Hall for the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival. His quintet opens with droning strains from Bob Sardo’s organ before the full band kicks into the modal theme. Blair enters with some ferocious statements on his electric “vitar,” an electric 5-string hybrid instrument that combines aspects of the violin and the guitar, on top of the throbbing rock-fueled bombast from drummer Jimmy Madison and bassist John Miller. Blair then showcases his soulful, smooth vocals on a relaxed rendition of the Richie Havens ballad “Sugarplums.” He picks his vitar like a blues-rock guitarist at the beginning of an unnamed funk-laden number before unleashing his formidable bowing technique in an exhilarating Sugarcane Harris vein. On his original “Sometimes a Man,” Blair distinguishes himself with velvety Jon Lucien-styled vocals on top of Madison’s supple brushwork and Sardo’s B-3 cushion. They hit an aggressive accord on an unnamed odd-time signature romp that puts the band through its paces, and they close out their Philharmonic set by wailing on a swinging 6/8 instrumental jam entitled “I Don’t Know Why” that gives Blair and Sardo plenty of room to stretch out on their solos. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on November 8, 1943, Blair grew up in San Diego as the eldest of nine children. He took to violin early on and by age 15 performed with the San Diego Symphony. He later attended the Eastman School of Music for two years, followed by a stint in the service during which time he performed as a member of the Air Force Strolling Strin

 Live at Carnegie Hall

Live at Carnegie Hall

$11.98

As the title implies, this disc captures the Bay Area-based It’s a Beautiful Day in concert at the venerable New York City performance Mecca Carnegie Hall. Although the band was on the road supporting their third long-player, Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime, the track list contains only “The Grand Camel Suite” from that disc. So, rather than re-treading material, Live at Carnegie Hall includes several new tunes from the band, as well as a couple of classics and well-chosen covers. As with many of the San Francisco groups to gain prominence during the late ’60s and early ’70s, It’s a Beautiful Day is best experienced in the interactive and reciprocal atmosphere of a live performance. The band uses their ability to stretch and reshape familiar works such as “A Hot Summer Day” or their incendiary reading of “Bombay Calling” — the latter featuring some jaw-dropping contributions from future Frank Zappa bassist Tom Fowler. His counter melodies and fluid timekeeping add a fullness and an additional dimension to the rocking version of “White Bird” and the cover of Taj Mahal’s “Give Your Woman What She Wants.” Fowler’s own composition, “Going to Another Party,” highlights the amazing ensemble work of this incarnation of It’s a Beautiful Day. Particularly inspired is the frenetic violin of David LaFlamme, who gives a workout to the new track “Good Lovin’” and the extended “Hot Summer Day.” It is a shame that this platter has been out of print on CD since the early ’90s, as it reveals an edgier side to the band, primarily known for their one hit, “White Bird.” Live at Carnegie Hall is not only more representative of the group’s true nature, but also the way they deserve to be heard and remembered. ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi

Mahavishnu Orchestra concert at Avery Fisher Hall on 27 Dec 73

Mahavishnu Orchestra concert at Avery Fisher Hall on 27 Dec 73

$4.98

This Mahavishnu Orchestra performance, recorded on the first night of a two-night stand at New York City’s Avery Fisher Hall, captures one of the very last performances ever by the legendary original lineup. This recording is a fascinating glimpse of the group at the tail end of their existence. In July of 1973, Mahavishnu Orchestra convened at London’s Trident Studios to record their ill-fated third studio album. By this point, the relationships within the band were strained and the resulting recordings, which for the first time featured compositions by bandmembers other than McLaughlin, would not see the light of day for several decades. In August and September, McLaughlin and Cobham embarked on a tour with Carlos Santana, further straining the relationships within the band, which would dissolve by the end of the year. The initial classic lineup of the group lasted less than three years and only released two studio albums and one live recording during this era, but these recordings had a profound effect, redefining the jazz/rock fusion movement in the process. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, Mahavishnu Orchestra created music that was often intricate and complex, performed by musicians whose virtuosity thrilled audiences, musicians and critics alike. While an argument can be made that the band was more cohesive and eloquent earlier in their all-too-brief career, the performances toward the end of 1973 are simply staggering in their ferocity. This night’s recording begins with Billy Cobham’s massive gong, as McLaughlin’s 12-string arpeggios begin washing over the audience. “Birds Of Fire” is a dramatic opener that unfolds into a dynamic exchange between guitar and drums versus violin, keyboards and bass. In the unusual time signature of 18/8, the interwoven nature of the arrangement makes for a thrilling and intense experience, although one unlike anything most jazz or rock music fans had ever heard before.

Following the captivating take on “Dance Of Maya,” they tackle another extended number, “Dream.” Again, there is an abundance of exploratory and propulsive playing here, but one of the most interesting aspects of this performance is that McLaughlin plays the first sequence on acoustic guitar, and it is far more compelling than the live version featured on Between Nothingness And Eternity, recorded the previous August. Often this initial sequence was merely a dreamy contemplative introduction to the fireworks to come, but here it is absolutely beautiful and McLaughlin’s playing has far more depth and character and Goodman’s haunting violin phrases are all the mo

Mingus Midnight Jam concert at Radio City Music Hall on 07 Jul 74

Mingus Midnight Jam concert at Radio City Music Hall on 07 Jul 74

$5.98

At the 1974 Newport Jazz Festival in New York, impresario George Wein revived a longstanding Newport tradition — the jam session. Since the very first summer bash in Rhode Island, Wein liked to mix-and-match different musicians on stage to exchange ideas and establish some kind of instant chemistry. (Perhaps the most audacious example of that was in 1958 when he matched seminal rock ‘n’ roller Chuck Berry with Swing-era sidemen, including clarinetist Rudy Rutherford and drummer Papa Jo Jones on a “Sweet Little Sixteen” jam). And as with all jam sessions, it’s all about the solos, which puts the onus here on Mingus, Waits, and Hanna to be the glue that holds it all together. The site of Wein’s midnight jam session (following a concert by pop star Diana Ross) at the ’74 festival was spacious Radio City Music Hall, which seats 6,000 or more. An unlikely crew of Charles Mingus on bass, Freddie Waits on drums, Roland Hanna on piano, Michael Urbaniak on violin, Howard McGhee on trumpet, and a phalanx of tenor saxophonists Eddie Daniels, Joe Farrell, and Dewey Redman opens with an extended interpretation of the jazz standard “All the Things You Are.” Mingus kicks off a brisk tempo, and McGhee boldly states the familiar theme before the rest of the troops quickly fall into place. The bebop trumpeter solos first, showing off his impressive facility and fertile imagination along the way. He is followed by tenor saxophonist Farrell, a Trane disciple and former Elvin Jones sideman, who at the time was enjoying a successful solo career with CTI Records. He summons up bold tones and a powerful flow of ideas in his solo before yielding to violinist Urbaniak, who turns in a potent bop-informed solo on his electrified instrument. Next up is Dewey Redman, a member of Keith Jarrett’s quartet at the time, who turns in a pungent-toned tenor solo that is teeming with renegade detours and audacious filigrees. He is followed in the solo order by fellow tenorman Daniels, who more closely

For their second and final jazz project, the adventurous Kronos Quartet (a top classical string quartet) performed eight Bill Evans compositions, plus “Nardis” (which Evans always claimed Miles Davis stole from him). Three songs apiece add either guitarist Jim Hall or bassist Eddie Gomez. The members of Kronos (David Harrington and John Sherba on violin, Hank Dutt on viola, and cellist Joan Jeanrenaud) do not improvise, but they expertly play Tom Darter’s arrangements, some of which (particularly “Peace Piece”) are transcriptions of pianist Evans’ solos. Overall this was an intriguing project, as was Kronos’ slightly earlier interpretations of Thelonious Monk tunes. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

 Music of the Heart [P&S]

Music of the Heart [P&S]

$6.99

After devoting his career to such horror films as Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Last House on the Left, director Wes Craven makes a dramatic change of pace with this inspiring drama about a teacher who helps change the lives of her students. Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras (Meryl Streep) teaches at an elementary school in Harlem, where discipline is a higher priority than the lively arts. But Roberta believes that studying music will give the children a sense of purpose invaluable in later life. Despite indifference from the school administration and budget cuts that force her to seek outside funding (and even threaten her job), Roberta struggles to teach the violin to her students, instilling a love of classical music in kids who might otherwise never have heard Bach or Mozart, and leading to a student recital at Carnegie Hall. Angela Bassett, Cloris Leachman, and Aidan Quinn highlight the supporting cast, and virtuoso violinists Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, and Mark O’Connor appear as themselves. The Music of the Heart is based on a true story; the real Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras and her students can be seen in the documentary Small Wonders. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
