Guitar tablature or Sheet Music?

Is it necessary to learn ordinary music notation for guitar or is it enough to know how to read tabs? It Is is worth the price to learn to read ordinary guitar sheets?

Many guitar books available with tablature notation also have a staff on top with guitar sheet music notation. It is also very common now classical guitar books also have a guitar tab staff below.

It is not very common some decades ago. Tablature is by some guitarists been considered cheating. Is it cheating or is it a help to have tabs at your disposal?

Personal to me as a guitar teacher experienced many instances when tablature is a great help to my pupils. however, I would be very happy if the young musician will put more energy into efforts to learn to read sheet music notation.

This is a big advantage to have a working knowledge of and understand how to read music scores and the various symbols pertaining to it.

Let's take a look at the advantages of being able to read guitar music notation:

1. You will be able to play a piece of music the way the composer had intended without having heard it before. This is possible because music notation consists of description about the pitch and also the length of notes and other symbols telling you how to play the notes and performing music.

2. You will have a huge library sheet music from various periods of time at your disposal. It is possible to play music written for other instruments as well as music notation does not describes how to play notes on a particular instrument but more notes to play. It is possible for a guitarist playing violin and practice scores speech and more.

3. As a guitarist you can write and arrange music for other instruments your band makes it possible to shorten the time rehearsal and facilitating use of more complex musical arrangements.

4. Being able to read and use sheet music will help you as a composer to notate All your ideas in a way that you could easily remember and to share with friends and others.

4. Internet is flooded with more or less accurate tablature renditions of popular the riffs, songs and more.

Okey, but what is the best alternative, guitar tablature or guitar sheet music?

My opinion is that you can use tablature as much as you want but I recommend you actually learn to read sheet music notation for the many benefits you will reap from it.

3 Fervent Travelers $12.99 Time for Three — fiddlers Zach DePue and Nick Kendall and standup bassman Ranaan Meyer — bill themselves as a genre-stretching, boundary-demolishing trio with a sound all their own. They do have impressive chops and Meyer, the main composer, has skills that draw on a wide range of music, but they’re not the only band in the land that’s blending classical, bluegrass, Gypsy jazz, and swing in its music. Groups like Leftover Salmon and the Hot Club of Cowtown explore similar territory, maybe without the classical European touches. That said, there’s still plenty of remarkable playing on 3 Fervent Travelers. “Wyoming 307″ opens the disc in a dark, droning, classical mode, then slowly evolves into a bluegrass barnburner with DePue and Kendall trading off sizzling lead lines and seguing directly into “Forget About It,” which continues the bluegrass-style mayhem with the fiddlers slipping up into their ear-tweaking higher registers, each playing a different variation on the melody while Meyer adds rhythmic accents on his bass. “Don Don” opens with a musical quote from “Jailhouse Rock,” then Kendall and DePue play an extended jazzy, Grappelli-meets-Bob Wills interlude, dropping out to give Meyer time for a brief solo before their Bill Monroe-meets-Monk finale. The violin accents on “Philly Phunk” live up to the tune’s title, while the solos range throughout the blues, jazz, country, and new music spectrum with unpredictable shifts in time, tempo, and timbre. They close the album with a classically influenced arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that accents the tune’s solemn tone, despite the rippling violin triplets that accent the second chorus. They close with a jazzy version of “Orange Blossom Special” that features Meyer’s impressive bass work setting up the dueling fiddles of DePue and Kendall, playing at lightning speed and dropping Arab and Gypsy jazz accents into the mix. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Even missing the megawatt thrills of later Crane Wife material, this unedited concert — bolstered for homecoming triumph by violin/vocals from Petra Haden, a sharp three-piece horn section, and an encore cameo from Pac NW legend and onetime Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey — shows why they are the best time going. Animal Lover $20.98 The reigning kings of the concept album are back with Animal Lover, another very dense though not completely impenetrable offering from the Residents. They seem to be continuing with the themes of mortality that surfaced in Demons Dance Alone, but this time viewed through the observations and relationships between humans and animals. Each song is accompanied by a written text (in addition to the lyrics), that sketches the scene and characters of the song. There seems to be an overall structure to the work as a whole because groups of songs are separated from each other by brief instrumentals. There’s a general malaise permeating Animal Lover, but each of the “sets” of songs presents its own moods and emotions (one set is more menacing and confrontational, one set very sad and sympathetic, etc.). As has been the case for decades now, the Residents have a knack for exposing the dark underbelly of the human condition, but this time it’s tempered with some surprisingly empathetic moments. “Inner Space” deals with a woman watching her father die in a hospital (the story explained through the eyes of a mouse, but sung by the daughter) and “The Cat” seems to be about a mother and son and their changed relationship both to each other and the family cat following the son’s absence, perhaps due to a war. There’s alot more going on in these songs and the way they’re arranged, but it will take multiple listens to begin to decode it. Musically, they’ve added some very organic sounds to their creepy synth stylings, adding lots of acoustic bass, harmonica and violin to the processed sounds of electric guitar and keyboards. There’s also a fairly extensive use of chimes, gongs, and gamelan. The “singing Resident” has a diminished role as they utilize a broader palette of voices, including a couple excellent performances by Molley Harvey. Bach: Sonatas & Partitas, BWV 1004-1006 $21.98 Clapton is God!” was the well-known graffiti scrawled across 20th century London, praising the Englishman’s fiery guitar playing. Based on Isabelle Faust’s blazing accounts of Bach’s sonatas and partitas on this 2010 Harmonia Mundi disc, one might expect to see the graffiti “Faust is God!” scrawled across 21st century Paris. Rather than play all six of these canonical works of the solo violin literature, Faust has chosen the D minor and E major partitas and placed the C major Sonata between them. All three are tremendously difficult both technically and expressively, but starting with the D minor Partita with its celebrated Chaconne was particularly audacious. Faust rises to the challenge with an utterly devastating account of the work. Playing with only a dab of vibrato but a boatload of virtuosity, she overcomes every technical hurdle in this surpassingly difficult work. She saves the best for last, and her Chaconne is stunningly powerful, as well as amazingly nuanced and profoundly moving. Her other two performances are equally impressive, especially the opening Adagio and Fugue from the C major Sonata, which builds from a whisper to a shattering contrapuntal climax. There have been other great recordings of these works, but Faust’s surely belongs among the best. Harmonia Mundi’s sound is close but not overly intimate. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

Bad as Me [Deluxe Version] $24.98 Bad as Me is Tom Waits’ first collection of new material in seven years. He and Kathleen Brennan — wife, co-songwriter, and production partner — have, at the latter’s insistence, come up with a tight-knit collection of short tunes, the longest is just over four minutes. This is a quick, insistent, and woolly aural road trip full of compelling stops and starts. While he’s kept his sonic experimentation — especially with percussion tracks — Waits has returned to blues, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, and jazz as source material. Instead of sprawl and squall, we get chug and choogle. For “Chicago” — via Clint Maedgen’s saxes, Keith Richards’ (who appears sporadically here) and Marc Ribot’s guitars, son Casey Waits’ drums, dad’s banjo, percussion and piano, and Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica (he appears numerous times here, too) — we get a 21st century take on vintage R&B. Indeed, one can picture Big Joe Turner fronting this clattering rush of grit and groove, and this album is all about groove. Augie Meyers appears on Vox organ and Flea on bass to guide Waits’ tablas and vocals on “Raised Right Men,” a 12-bar stagger filled with delightful lyrical clich? s from an America that has passed on into myth — Waits does nothing to de-mystify this; he just makes it greasy and danceable. The slow, spooky “Talking at the Same Time” is still in blues form albeit with ska-styled horns to make things more exotic, as Waits waxes about the current state of economic affairs. He showcases history’s circular nature as he bridges our national narrative from 1929-1941, and up to the present day: “Well it? s hard times for some/For others it? s sweet/Someone makes money when there? s blood in the street…Well we bailed out all the millionaires/They got the fruit/We got the rind…” Rockabilly rears its head on “Get Lost,” with David Hidalgo strutting a solid ’50s guitar snarl above the horns. Cesaria $14.99 On this self-titled album, her first for Nonesuch, the Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora delivers another batch of 12 strong songs. She is accompanied on this record by various guitarists and percussionists, with the occasional violin and accordion thrown into the mix. This added instrumentation supports Evora’s singing (the undisputed focus of the record) marvelously. As usual, her phrasing is exquisite, her voice rising and falling like the tide, caressing the contours of the simple melodies. The charm of Evora’s singing is that she sounds like someone’s grandmother, singing to herself as she goes about her day’s chores. It is this hominess that makes her so endearing, so magically restful. And with lyrics such as “you must work hard/so that tomorrow/you’re not in need,” the grandmother connection becomes even more obvious. This recording was overseen by Paulino Vieira in Paris, and, in addition to achieving a remarkably distinct sound, he also contributes exquisite guitar and bass (as well as other instruments). There are similarities between Cesaria Evora’s music and other traditions: the buoyant rhythms are sometimes reminiscent of Cuban and South American musical styles, her vocal glissandos and bends are almost bluesy, and there are even shades of Mediterranean folk music evident in the contours of the melodies. However, the end result is something wholly unlike anything else. Crawling Wind $17.98 Most Univers Zero recordings originally appeared on the small French Atem and Cyronic labels, and were not exactly easy to obtain at the time of their initial release. But the long out of print Crawling Wind was recorded as an EP for Eastern Works, the Japanese division of Recommended Records (ReR), and it has achieved a kind of cult status over the years because of its even greater rarity. The original EP was recorded at what was quite possibly Univers Zero’s creative peak, after their first three LPs and before they started moving away from acoustic chamber rock and toward a sound that was a little more conventionally electric. The three pieces on the EP (two studio recordings and one live track) are supplemented on Cuneiform’s CD reissue with two additional live tracks, plus “Influences,” a studio piece previously released only on ReR’s 1983 two-disc Rock in Opposition sampler, which featured other iconoclastic bands/artists of the time, such as Art Bears, Faust, Henry Cow, and Robert Wyatt. The mixture of studio and live tracks (and the different times and places of the recordings) doesn’t allow Crawling Wind to generate quite the intensity of UZ’s three prior recordings — 1313, Heresie, and Ceux Du Dehors. But with the exception of one early track from 1979 (an alternate live version of “Complainte,” which appeared on 1313, UZ’s first release), all the tracks on the Cuneiform release were recorded from 1982-1984, and are mature examples of UZ’s unique gothic chamber rock sound, which featured a combination of strings (violin, cello, viola), woodwinds (clarinet, bassoon, oboe), and the powerful rhythm section of founder, leader, and primary composer Daniel Denis on drums, and either Guy Seger or Christian Genet on bass. Univers Zero enthusiasts will know what to expect from the studio tracks, which project either the moody gloom of Heresie (“Before the Heat”), or the ferocious, dissonant energy of Ceux Du Dehors (“Toujours Plus ? L’est,” “Influence…

It contains all the recordings the great Soviet violinist made for EMI: his 1958 and 1969 recordings of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, his 1954 and 1958 recordings of the same composer’s violin concerto, his 1956 and 1969 recordings of Brahms’ Double Concerto, his 1960 and 1969 recordings of the same composer’s violin concerto plus recordings of concertos and sonatas by composers running the gamut from Mozart to Shostakovich. In each and every performance, Oistrakh demonstrates not only his impeccable technique but his warm tone and above all his irreproachable interpretations. No matter what the style or content of the work, Oistrakh understands every one from the inside out. There is tart sweetness in his Schubert, chaste passion in his Franck, cold fire in his Sibelius, insouciant sparkle in his Lalo, tempered strength in his Beethoven, aching lyricism in his Prokofiev, and reserved rapture in his Brahms.
