So many children suffer from school anxiety I recently read a book called “The Spirit of Learning” written by Dr Erin Neill. I recommend this book as a must read for parents teachers, and counsellors is a great resource for anyone who works with or lives with school-aged children. The fears and frustrations surrounding school anxiety can be very intense. The book offers easy-to-follow explanations about anxiety, how it can devastate children, and how to conquer it. It provides solutions for parents whose children are being bullied, who are afraid of test-taking, who are overwhelmed with homework, or afraid of failing in school. School anxiety is being used as a broad term in this book, It refers in past, to the problem from home that children during to school. The school environment can be a problematic place with emphasis on evaluation, achievement and testing.Other factors might include peer pressure, being bullied, or not getting along with a teacher.
Thomas, in sixth grade has been playing Violin since third grade. He is talented, loves to practice, and is one of the soloists in his school orchestra. Starting a day or two before each concert, his stomach tightens up whenever he thinks about playing. Poor Thomas is a victim of our educational system which specializes in drawing a distinction between valuable success and humiliating failure.A few hours before the concert, he feels jumpy and is unable to relax He rehearses his solo over and over again in his mind. Minutes before his solo, stress hormones course through his body, his breathing become rapid, and all his senses are heightened. Anxiety caused him to fall apart and his gifted ability vanishes and he does not play his part well.Thomas knows feels that he is not a “winners” and become he has become very disappointed angry at the denial of the long sought after and expected reward.
In her book Dr Neill identifies valid issues that will have a significant bearing on the future of all education globally – in the school, home, work place – and most importantly in the new learning centres that are very likely to replace outmoded traditional schools that are rapidly outliving their usefulness and proving to be financial encumbrances on government resources (tax payers’ funds). The validity of so-called rigid, rational, national curricula and the push by governments for more control and power over education are thrown into question. The significance of the issue of the selection process and education of teacher trainees becomes painfully apparent. The place of outmoded and wavering ideologies that are still adhered to rigidly by their proponents, and which continue to define the style and content of pedagogy, are also severely questioned as a result of the analysis of her research presented in Dr Neill’s book.
Dr Erin Neill is a researcher and scholar and the material presented in the website http://www.betterbusinessandeducation.com.au is the product of her research and scholarship.

Critical pedagogy attempts to help students question and challenge domination, and the beliefs and practices that dominate. In other words, it is a theory and practice of helping students achieve critical consciousness. Critical pedagogue Ira Shor defines critical pedagogy as Habits of thought, reading, writing, and speaking which go beneath surface meaning, first impressions, dominant myths, official pronouncements, traditional clichs, received wisdom, and mere opinions, to understand the deep meaning, root causes, social context, ideology, and personal consequences of any action, event, object, process, organization, experience, text, subject matter, policy, mass media, or discourse. Critical pedagogy includes relationships between teaching and learning. It is a continuous process of unlearning, learning and relearning, reflection, evaluation and the impact that these actions have on the students, in particular students who have been historically and continue to be disenfranchised by traditional schooling.
