To really Copyright your 'IP' – your 'Intellectual Property', whether a song, lyrics, music or even a symphony is very, very simple. You write it down on a sheet of paper. At the bottom of paper, write the words 'Copyright by …' Then, where the dot was three -'…' – You write your name, followed by the year. And this – copyrighted.

But there is a problem …

Copyrighting a song, lyric or whatever is one thing; YOU really really proving that copyrighted material is another. Or in other words, proving material is yours.

But there is a better way now … to publish it.

Now, bear with me for just a sec here … I am not an attorney. But one of the major advantages of the Internet is that it makes it pretty easy to educate yourself about a lot of different things, such as the Copyright Act. For example, I copyrighted song a few years back. It is a Country Rock song, and I submitted it to (go figure!) A label Country Rock in the USA.

Very often, songwriters heard nothing more, and that is what happened my song. I heard nothing back. Then, by pure chance, I heard a Rap tune the radio. I'm not a Rap fan, but somehow, part of the lyric sounded familiar: why? Because it is measured from my song Country Rock!

I found the artist, contact the record company, (which is in Finland!) and to cut a long story short, I received nothing but the runaround. My song is ripped off. But the plain fact is – it's my own fault. I am not 'copyright official', I live in UK and not available Copyright Registration Service, the U.S. Copyright Service is too expensive for me ($ 45 per song) and the problem is that I just can not prove that I'd written the song when I said that.

Of course, if it is a Big, International N º 1, I would have done something more about it – but even then, actually proving that the song is mine would've been expensive and no guarantee of success.

The bottom line is this: if you want something Copyright've created, all you have to do is say it is 'through the Copyright …' (You) and the date. Write it on paper or label a CD or Computer Files in the same way.

BUT … If there is a chance of making money from your job, or if there is a chance that someone may find your material interesting enough to rip you off, you need to do more than just the 'label' it.

You can use the U.S. Copyright Services, you can do what commonly called 'Man's Copyright poor' (useless!) And the present, there is a third way too – Publish your songs on the Internet.

By Publish your stuff online you create a 'digital paper Trailer '(oxymoron of the year, 2009?), a' digital fingerprint, if you like, you can track back to your original publication. The absolute best way to ensure you can prove your songs you have to have an Independent, Third Party Witnesses. Someone who can stand up and say, "Yes, Your Honour, I saw the song published where and when claimed …"

The big increase in Copyright Theft means that there are different ways to publish and copyright your Intellectual Property On-line these days, and savvy Internet users are starting to see the benefits of this type of service.

Whichever method you use, make sure that any amount you have correctly published and copyrighted – especially if you submit your work using the 'net, or post your songs on a social networking site.

And by the way – all over-recognized Copyright Sign, the small 'C' encircled by an 'O' – © – means without any further beyond what you can read!
